Though tbh - I’m more interested in nature than cities anyway. Vietnam is damn good for that, even though all the animals got eaten in the war.

Same here, the beach isn’t the be all and end all but the other half likes to spend at least one day on the beach and we don’t want to be anywhere resembling Benidorm! We will be exploring etc, boat trips are out favourite.Rich B wrote: Fri Oct 26, 2018 12:15 pm Though tbh - I’m more interested in nature than cities anyway. I was referring to Pete's post where he said one place was like Benidorm full of Russians.Rich B wrote: Fri Oct 26, 2018 1:02 pmits definitely not all like Benidorm!Zonda_ wrote: Fri Oct 26, 2018 12:42 pmSame here, the beach isn’t the be all and end all but the other half likes to spend at least one day on the beach and we don’t want to be anywhere resembling Benidorm! It wasn't like that when I was there - it was bursting with character and still had a "faded French-colonial" feel...Rich B wrote: Fri Oct 26, 2018 12:05 pm I thought Hoi An looked stunning at first, but the longer I was there there the faker it seemed. Like it had been neatened up and managed to be a Disney image of what it was for a western audience. Little details like every shop sign being the same colour/font, everything being organised and tidied, it just didn’t feel like the other cities I’d been in that were gloriously unorganised and hectic.
Give me somewhere mental like Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi every time.

My best mate lives just outside Benidorm - its actually quite nice. Guess with all holiday places you get tourist and local experiences. Chatting to people who live there is the best way to discover things or look on ex pat forums. Or ask here of course.

I went earlier this year, and it did feel a little like it had lost that 'something'. Still a great place to visit for a few days, has a decent beach if that's what they want.DaveE wrote: Fri Oct 26, 2018 1:25 pmIt wasn't like that when I was there - it was bursting with character and still had a "faded French-colonial" feel...Rich B wrote: Fri Oct 26, 2018 12:05 pm I thought Hoi An looked stunning at first, but the longer I was there there the faker it seemed. Da Nang was much less appealing, as noted before, endless western resorts along the waterfront and total chaos in the city. The airport was surprisingly modern though!
