It's a difficult one, because the market dictates that a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Therefore was the dealer taking advantage of your Dad? Could he have got more money elsewhere? How did he know that it was really worth £2k more beforehand?

And I know this sounds obtuse, but I don't mean it to be. It's the market that dictates what your Dad's car was worth, not VW.

I owned a Rover Coupe VVC back in 2000 when BMW announced it was ditching Rover Group. The value of my car went down because there was concern about unsupported cars, lack of spare parts etc etc etc. Do BMW owe me any money?

Taking this to its nth degree, leasing companies should be able to claim compensation as well, as the guaranteed final value of the leased car would be lower than originally calculated, and there would be a gap between the payments and the end value of the car.

I remember a security guard at work had just bought a brand new Rover 400 around the same time for approx £15k. 8 months later he wanted to chop it in for a Megane and was offered £6.5k for it.

Only proof would be the trading dealer that mentioned the prices being lower than they should be. This was sometime after the announcement though as he hung on to it for a while, I think it was 3 years old with only about 15k on it. It was only after an injector failed (it had needed a new steering column because that also failed 6 months earlier) he decided to get shot of it.
Be interesting to see the cap guide for the months before and after announcement, surely that’s where the proof lies?

Call me cynical, but surely dealers taking those cars in as part ex just saw an opportunity to lowball customers with a plausible story?
