Jesus wept - just how quick was Bellof in that 956 35 years ago!

Even quicker than you're thinking if the -10sec thing is correct

Some almost unbelievable speculation that it'll be a low 5mim time. Lets hope we don't have to wait long to find out!

The record has to be broken, doesn't it. The car has got nearly twice the power for a start, let alone the aero, electronics and tyre advances over the last 35 years!

Either that or Bellof was an alien from a far higher species 8-)

I heard talk of aiming for 5m11

Which is an average speed of 150mph

Average

To beat it by a clear minute, I guess. Aim for the stars, and all that!

There's a tiny voice in the recesses of my brain that thinks the record should be left to stand. It's 'Ring folklore and was set in an actual race (OK, qualifying) environment, with a real car that's eligible for racing.

The 919 Evo is just a willy to be waved, and I know this doesn't make any sense but there it is.

That occurred to me too.

Then I saw the footage of the 919 and it just looked mental - go 919! :)

I have zero problem with car companies building faster and faster cars to chase this record, as long as they share the videos.

I totally agree Dave, and hate the thought of progress being stunted in any way.

But.............there's just something that doesn't sit well with me. I think if it was the same conditions (homologated race car, over a race weekend) I'd be all for it.

I'm not explaining this very well, mainly because I don't really know what I'm trying to say. Especially as I think the 919 Evo is almost other-worldly levels of awesome.

Chill, the race lap record will still stand though. And that’s the one usually quoted in everything as opposed to outright track record.

The Ring has changed a fair bit since then too hasn’t it? Loads of bumps ironed out and visibility improved not to mention resurfaced countless times.
I’d like to see a 956 attack the ring now on modern tyres and brakes (a simple upgrade) to see what time it sets in comparison.

I'm completely chilled. I'm not a millenial like you so am able to voice a contrary viewpoint without getting all triggered and upset, and start crying out for my safe place.

I'd be interested in seeing what a new CTR Yellowbird does when compared to the original (which was "only" 8:05 apparently)

You needed a safe space this morning, judging by the comment you deleted in the MX-5 thread ;).

All the talk of it not being fair is dumb, if we followed that logic every lap record after the first one would've been unfair because it wasn't set in a 30's Mercedes.

It's good that someone is making a proper effort at it after all this time.

Where did I say it wasn't fair? Have you been on the 240PP moron pills as well?

That part wasn't directly aimed at you, it was a general statement. Put the handbag down dear.

The clip John Barker showed on FB looked utterly ridiculous. Like a Gran Turismo replay played at x2.
It's what a race car can do with no restrictions.

You need to chill the fuck out.

For me, there's something very special about Belof's 956 lap.

Not to take anything away from anyone who sets a fast lap there as it's a mighty feat.

Maybe it's a bit like comparing a long standing athletics record - yes, they're bound to get broken as modern training, diet and other things are so more advanced. But the fact a record stands for so long in spite of these advances, seems to make it more incredible.

I think the point is that Bellof was a preternatural talent whose career was tragically cut short - his record was a ever-present reminder of how good he was and once it gets superseded, a small part of that fades into history.

That's the real downside of this 919 blowing the record into smithereens - not the fact the car can go faster which is just inevitable & natural progression.

A nice touch would be if they dedicate the time to Bellof and his service to Porsche (which of course, they may do when they announce it).

Thanks but I don't need advice from you.
