I must admit I do find the 991 to be just that bit too big. I'm sure Porsche's eyes are dry, however.

Where are these aides and how do they cool it? Do you spec them separately or are they included. Do you have to pay them a pension contribution or are they self employed?

So many questions :?

Over time, people become more and more like me. This does not seem to please them. :D

I must confess though, when I first saw the 993 and 997, my only emotion was one of embarrassment at how to explain the sticky secretion in my gentleman's area. Less so the 996 and 991, but hey - still 911s.

And the 992 looks like an updated 991 so there's really no need for all this angst.

Jobbo wrote: Fri Aug 31, 2018 7:34 am Those water-cooled 911s are such an aberration. Put a 993 next to them and see how the purity was lost, the belt line is so much higher and they were just grafting a Boxster rear onto the 911 shape.
I think you mean Boxster front... the accusation that was so baseless that they spent the next 6 years undoing it...

Interestingly, no-one really changed their mind about the 996.1. It was always seen as sub-par from a design standpoint and although people have mellowed over time, no-one thinks it is an improvement on the 993 on purely aesthetics. That kinda makes the theory that everyone prefers the latest model after they've got used to it defunct.

By contrast, the 993 was always acclaimed as being the better looking car but the 964 is now clawing that back. I see the 997 versus 991/992 situation as more akin to the 996 - people may mellow on the looks but unlikely they'll be seen as 'better' looking than a 997 even in 20 years time.

The air cooled era versus the water-cooled are really two separate series of cars, from both a design and engineering point of view so I really only think it makes sense to compare styling within those two periods. If I were to rank them purely on styling and bum basic models I'd probably say 997.2>997.1>991.2>996.2>991.1>996.1>992. 992 may move up that order when fully released and out of camo - but not far.

Whilst everyone is being anal about the minor details can someone explain the 911 model numbering system as it makes no sense to me apart from the .1 and .2 bits.

The above is an interesting article and some stuff in there I didn't know (such as swapping to 900+ numbers on closer collaboration with VW).

I think latterly they've been making it up though. "Creative freedom" as they've called it. No idea where they're going to go after 992 as they'd have to jump to 994, 998 or 999. That's also on the assumption that this car will actually be called the 992 - everyone thought the 991 was going to be called the 998 until Porsche decided otherwise.

ETA: this is nerd catnip (though some way out of date) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_type_numbers
