Re: Hire Harry's boat

Some things are financially stupid to hire and you're better off buying them or not bothering. There you go.
Agree with this, although your views weren't quite as YOLO when I bought that car, IIRC. Along with numerous others, you were quite scathing. Clearly the two purchases are different but in terms of 'getting enjoyment out of it' I was chuffed with the car whilst I had it, then later came to sell it for a change, the way anybody would. So why is spending 3k for a day on somebody else's boat deemed acceptable?IanF wrote: Thu Jun 28, 2018 11:55 am People can spend their own money however they see fit and, as long as they get enjoyment out of it, I can’t see how it’s a waste of cash.
you'd pay £6000 a day for a rowing boat and still argue that you got a good deal.ShockDiamonds wrote: Thu Jun 28, 2018 1:00 pmAgree with this, although your views weren't quite as YOLO when I bought that car, IIRC. PS - To my mind it is acceptable, if that's what you want to spend money on. Nobody's business what anybody spends money on. It's the about-face in perspective that I am questioning.
similar in cost.JLv3.0 wrote: Thu Jun 28, 2018 2:11 pm The "points" made in this thread are absolutely unfathomable. I can't even pretend to understand how chartering someone else's yacht and buying a really expensive, phenomenally dull diesel saloon are related.
Ordinarily, they are utterly unrelated. Which is how they should stay until somebody on the InternetRich B wrote: Thu Jun 28, 2018 2:21 pmsimilar in cost.JLv3.0 wrote: Thu Jun 28, 2018 2:11 pm The "points" made in this thread are absolutely unfathomable. I wouldn't buy an aluminum boat in St Tropez either, Ian. Although I guess it must have crossed the Atlantic so probably does float.IanF wrote: Thu Jun 28, 2018 11:55 am Fiberglass is the American spelling Jobbo, so floats just fine.Sailing is fun for a few hours and they look pretty, but it gets pretty tiring quite quickly travelling at a few knots at some stupid angle trying to get somewhere. For example, say you had a boat in Palma, Mallorca; you could sail all day and still be in Palma bay that evening - lovely once, but a change of scenery would be great next time! Do that in a motorboat, and you could have lunch in Andratx, moor up for the night in Soller and travel around to Pollença the next.
GG, waste of cash? Really? If all you had was £300k maybe, but I think Harry’s garage shows he has a bit more to spend. People can spend their own money however they see fit and, as long as they get enjoyment out of it, I can’t see how it’s a waste of cash. I guess you either enjoy boating or you don’t.
From the article I read, and it’s pretty common with boats of this size, people tend to rent out their boats when they’re either too busy or when it’s peak season eg. Harry rents his out for the whole month of August and then enjoys it himself in September when the season has died down, but the weather is still lovely. The fact that renting it out for a month pays his annual mooring fees/ maintenance etc must make it particularly sweet..![]()

All the surfaces look wipe clean and I'm sure he leases the cleaners too.Jobbo wrote: Thu Jun 28, 2018 3:02 pm And Harry may enjoy the income through August but he'll need good cleaners in September!
