Got a few more; now the display is full I thought I’d rearrange them. I think I preferred it before
I have enough extras now that I need another display. Think I’m going to go for the 32 car size; I have about 14 to go in it so far.

Looking at that photo, there's a massive difference by having the back on the frame. I don't have a background image but I think it would benefit from something - even a sheet of white paper. Does look better when you can see all the way through though. Maybe a second sheet of the transparent plastic would work.

Some subtle backlighting would look nice too.

Yeah, that's not happening

Not sure how you'd achieve even backlighting in a hidden way when it's intended to be mounted against a wall without a lot of faff.

Led strips behind an opaque surface that sits against the wall?
Edit: the even bit might be trickier to achieve, maybe something reflective on the back?

Each compartment is separated from the next by opaque walls on both sides, top and bottom so a reflective rear sheet wouldn't do anything between compartments. I think a transparent sheet front and back would be best for lighting but the plastic glass provided by Ikea is quite flexible and allows the cars in the middle to get their wheels over the edge of the compartment frame and you can't easily get them out without opening it up. Think I'll stick with my original plan of just using this to display them in a nice order and keep the dust off rather than anything cleverer.

No integrale, very disappointing
This is my current favourite, not even a hotwheels. I’d like a couple more so I can paint one the same colour as my car…
