It absolultely feels a bit zippier - I'm familiar with the hosting company, and while I have
strong opinions on them that rule them out for me at work, can't grumble about the underlying hardware specs. Just the upgrade at a basic hardware level (not even amount of RAM etc, just more modern CPUs) should handle the bot load better, etc.
And credit where credit is due for doing an upgrade on a Friday night for a server that
costs you money rather than
making you money, and where the userbase are a bunch of cunts

nice one!
Well I was with Linode, I've been with them probably 20 years now, recommended by our former alumni David Brown. Alas over the years they've very much moved into the "premium" end of hosting and their prices have increased to match, so now is a good a time as any to move.
It was a toss up between OVH, Netcup and Hetzner for hosting - latter two have good reviews but no UK hosting options. They all lack the premium support or backup options that Linode has, but I've now configured it to backup to my own NAS so that's covered, and I rarely needed any support anyway with the amount of resources for stuff like Ubuntu out there now.

I don’t know what most of that means, but is there any way we can contribute to costs Matt? Please.

This.
You shouldn’t be out of pocket for running this for us.

Yep, i’d be more than happy to send a voluntary yearly sub or whatever method worked to make sure one of us isn’t stitched up with the whole cost (bearing in mind i have zero clue on what sort of figures it takes to host a forum!!)

Unfortunately I only take payment in Lotus cars, so if you'd all like to have a whip around....
I appreciate the gesture, but honestly, the hosting fees are now down to £65/year, and Google ads from CL bring in about £120/year which covers it, so it's all golden. Some of the other tech work gets done during my downtime at work....so....you're all technically paying me to do that from the public purse anyway

Glad you’re not out of pocket, I’d have thrown something in too, but in the absence of funds to send you a car do we all need to put 50p in and get you a nice keyring for Christmas instead

Seems faster since the upgrade. Does the forum hamster now have a carbon fibre wheel now?
jamcg wrote: Sun Sep 21, 2025 11:48 am

The problem was caused by Beany putting 50p in the hamster.

Better than you putting your tuppence in the dog.
...honestly, I'm not even sure if that makes sense. Sounds a bit horrid though, doesn't it?
