Jobbo wrote: Tue Sep 09, 2025 9:49 am I think I'd get bored pretty quickly with a manual grinder. And in the £250 grinders video he does say the Baratza's downside is that it's noisy and he wouldn't want it in his home for that reason. So I'd be tempted to spend £240 on the DF54, though apparently that's a bit messy  Get out the Timculator and check out his sub-£500 grinder video...
I'm in the middle of exactly the same thought process, but I think I'll probably land on the Baratza. I've been scouring the web to try and get a bargain DF54 but, not for the first time, I'm finding that coffee people tend to think that their equipment does not depreciate as they want practically the same money for the used stuff and are unwilling to negotiate (presumably they sell it, so they just be right I suppose!).

Yes yes, I know it's probably not gonna taste much different but £160 isn't the end of the world for a present for one's self.
I’ve been having exactly the same thoughts. Also a James Hoffman recommendation seems to be one of the key indicators of whether people want full price s/h.

The thing is, there are probably loads of really good grinders that are barely different in terms of their output and we’d all likely be very happy with a lot of them. But we all deify JH’s picks because we basically all don’t have a clue.

It’s like chocolate. I’ve done blind taste tests with a range of 70% dark chocolates between cheap Tesco and £30 a bar stuff. Most people prefer the cheap Tesco stuff. So either you need to be schooled on what ‘good’ is, otherwise we’re all just cosplaying at having sophisticated tastes 😂

The Wilfa Svart is available secondhand for £60-70 which is better than half price. Just saying.

I’d sooner spend the £160 on beans than a fancy pants grinder

Why would you want to grind your pants? Especially the fancy ones. Seems a waste. Coffee beans, however...

I've had one of these for a few years, cheap but came recommended and its perfectly decent for my coffee tastes.

I'm only sticking store bought beans in there and I get a decent morning brew :) Cost about £22

You’re going to need beans as well as a grinder so it’s not like you can choose one over the other 😄

Maybe stamp on the beans to break them up, save the cost of a grinder.

Jobbo vid1 on page1 of this Fred shows blokeIhaveneverseenbefore positively reviewing the Kingrinder P1. The model-down P0 is on the long river website for £22 delivered. Purchased.

Swervin_Mervin wrote: Tue Sep 09, 2025 10:02 am Save your cash and buy it pre-ground. If you're buying decent coffee in the first place it's going to be ground as it's packed for sending to you.
I resisted buying a grinder for ages with this logic but found I couldn't change beans because the fine grind of one place wasn't the same as another.

I had a hand grinder for a bit but it was very annoying to do every time you want a coffee - aka I agree with Jobbo.

Ended up with this: https://www.origincoffee.co.uk/products ... us-grinder which can be found for £155ish. It seems to work very well but as JH says it does retain the grounds a bit and required a bash on the top to release them. I can live with that and it doesn't look like a big ugly appliance like mahy of the others.

I bought a cheap manual KinGrinder, but haven't used it yet as I'm finishing off a bag of pre-ground that I opened. I only have one - maybe 2 mugs of coffee per day, so I'm not sure yet if a manual grndr will be annoying or not.

I did send away for some small bags of beans - want to test before buying any larger quantities. They were all apparently roasted on the day I ordered them (edit: according to their website that's what they do : only roast once an order is placed), and there is a tiny airhole on the packaging where you can have a sniff. They all smell stupendous - particularly the dark roast - but I need to see what tastes best to me.....

I cannot understand that level of finessing to make a cup of espresso.

It looks like a good espresso though.

Hoffman has recently uploaded a video where he's performed CT scans on the residual puck of coffee. I always thought swirling those pin things in the coffee before tamping was utterly ridiculous but I can now see the benefit.
