the one question is the insurance one - would they deny a related claim based on them not being present?
But they were present.

Thanks all, there is more of a consensus here to get rid of them so I'll do that.
But the poll says more people have them fitted than not

I recently had a wheel off on Mrs mik’s etron. Bolts are supposed to be re-torqued to 160nm. Which I did for 4 bolts, but couldn’t face going over 135nm for the lock nut. Which I know is stoopid, but it just didn’t seem worth the risk of whapping them up to the official number.

This is true, but then the comments are that they are generally useless and a risk. If it was an option from new would you bother ticking the box?

If you’re claiming because your wheels have been nicked how would they know what nuts were or weren’t there

When I bought my cars both had scabby locking wheel nuts, so I purchased new OEM ones to replace them.
Probably makes it more likely that the whole car will get stolen, rather than just the wheels

Robber looks at Marc’s swanky new TV.
Robber can’t pick the lock of the front door.
Robber hires low loader and steals entire house.
It’s a risk we all must live with
Dave!

This just shows the amount of effort it takes to remove them. Not much more than a normal nut

I’m wondering how you’d get the one with the rotating collar off. Aside from welding.

Hammer on *thing* that crushes the collar (it’s not hugely thick) preventing it from rotating.

The BMW spinny collars are removed with a slide hammer, then a spline adapter hammered into the remaining bolt.
