I see this comment banded about quite a lot re: car collections. The costs to take any object into a museum collection (which generally includes a legal status assigned to the transaction which ties the museum to a certain level of ongoing care for the benefit of the community the museum serves) is staggering. When I worked in such organisations (national archives, library and a honking great big museum) all of them went through storage upgrades, all of which have conservation or preservation components. The bills are silly numbers, really quickly. To that point, it's really not uncommon for an organisation to refuse an object being transferred because the costs in perpetuity are too high.

In my experiences, all the orgs have been publicly funded or through self generated revenue. I'd genuinely like to spend some time back in the industry, but at somewhere like The Petersen in LA, or the Porsche Archives, where I assume a very different funding model is in place. I'd love to know how the Petersen pays for itself and how the money is divided up. I'd love to know what % of each new Porsche sold goes to the museum/archive/historic collection. Or to put it another way, it would take someone like Bernie with his wealth to be able to look after a collection like the one he's selling.

It's probably one of the key differences between these cars going into collections versus museums - it's highly likely the museum will keep it for either a very long time, or forever. A collector could sell a car again in 5yrs and dodge the majority of the ongoing costs to keep it in its best form.

Haven't watched it. Probably won't bother as - whilst he is no Shmeee - Hartley (all of the Hartley's in fact) always seems to exude a true passion for one thing only - money.
