Do automatic ICE cars need tachometers/rev-counters?

Rev-counter

1. It's always essential.

2. I prefer to have one so I can see what's going on with the engine, and I use it when in manuel mode - which I do often

4. I prefer to have one so I can see what's going on with the engine, but I accept I don't really respond to it - the car predicts shift points better than I can.

5. I'm happy to do without. I'd rather use the display for something else.

Yep - the much more useful one is oil temperature rather than pressure so you're not hooning it before its up to temperature - the 911 takes a looong time for the oil to get completely warm.
VXR8 had battery voltage, oil pressure, and oil temp. I'd agree the latter was most useful.

One of the reasons I got an wifi obd dongle was to try and get this info in the Evora - although I then found it's best to do your research before purchasing it, as there isn't an oil temp sensor in the powerplant

(It's proved very useful anyway so wasn't money wasted).
In addition to the rev counter and speedo, the 155 had fuel, oil temp, water temp and oil pressure. It was always interesting seeing the water temp rise up then fall back as the oil came up to temperature.

One of the lovely features of the 166 was that in 3rd gear the rev counter and speedo needles moved in sync. 8-)
