I've started phoning around for comparables and getting cheaper quotes already, so I phone my current insurer to cancel the auto-renewal.

"What's the cheaper premium you're being quoted because we might be able to find a better price for you"

The belligerent part of me wants to treat this like a tender. They've already put in their price for the business and it was a shit, overinflated price, ergo they don't deserve the business.

However, from a haggling perspective, that would be a terrible decision

it really isn’t. every time i’ve asked a current insurer for their cheaper price to match/beat a new quote i’ve had it’s been a massive waste of time, as they drop by something silly like £50 when the difference is hundreds.

i now tell them they should have given me the best price and i don’t want them to try.

That's how it feels for sure.

Last time I got the "what's the best quote you've had" response from the current insurer I've told them to remove their fees as well. I pay a fee for your brokerage, so if I beat it myself and you then match that price, you've failed to do your job so I'm not paying you for it. Funny enough that most disagree (and get sacked).

Wanted to add some jewellery onto the policy and could find no evidence (including looking at the current account for payments) that I took it out. So, no insurance on the property for what looks like 10 months. Have signed up to a new policy, but goodbye 9+ years of no claims, continuous cover.

No clue how I managed to mess that up. I have never failed to sort out insurance before.

Oh man, I feel your pain! Insurance is now the present that just keeps on giving from the perspective of the insurer, not the policyholder. The things they promise you never fail to take every opportunity they get to make the prices higher than before. Well, they increase just for the car by 20% more, which is okay I guess, but home insurance I got to pay for over 100% more? That’s just nuts! Well at least you did manage to find a better deal with the Meerkat still an eye watering rise though. Insurance companies are really good at making sure that one realizes why it was so quiet when nothing at all happened and no insurance claims to be made either.

For [reasons] you have to call them when dealing with multicar policies, so I did to cancel the renewal. They offered to review their initial offer, and with no changes, they dropped the price by 30% which brought them in £51 lower than the cheapest appropriate combination of two individual policies.

I call that a win.

Car insurance is a scam

Daughter shopped around and had a quote 10 days ago for the bargain price of £2825. Follows through with the quote today as the car was supposed to be delivered this afternoon and its changed to £3225 now she owns the car, nothing else has changed!

The car is not coming now until Sunday as the drivers train home was cancelled due to the weather but I'm too frightened to shop around again just in case it goes up again!

trying to get a quote so close to the purchase will massively inflate the cost. if you do, do it right now!

Clear your cookies for the sites concerned and run the quotes again.

Surely the quote is saved? I've not had a saved quote increase in price.

The home insurance fun continues. Just had a renewal letter through for the home policy I must have taken out after all, last year. But how is beyond me.

I can find no matching transactions looking at my bank statements, I have no emails, text messages or logins for their portal, it is all rather mysterious. Either way, it will be cancelled which is a shame, as they've lowered the price compared to last year.

Separately we've got home emergency cover. They've just sent me an urgent important letter to tell me that due to a rounding error in their system they will be charging me £4.51/month instead of £4.50, but I can cancel if I am unhappy with that.

Edit: running through the renewal cancellation gave me the pieces of the puzzle. It was a monthly DD (we always pay annually, so don't know what I was thinking) from a name that bears no resemblance to the insurance company. So, that's why I couldn't find anything. The name of the collecting company only became apparent when it told me not to cancel the DD yet.

The quote was saved when I checked a couple of days later but was greyed out when she bought the car 10 days later!

It does seem tricky if you buy a new car and need a new policy!
