That would get a thanks from me. I don't thank people for stopping when there are parked cars are on their side of the road though, that's just following the rules... hopefully I'm not doing it wrong? I might do if they waited a particularly long time I suppose.
Some people do thank for that though, and I'm just thinking that people are basically then thanking you for not being an absolute dick, which shouldn't really require thanks!
Is correct.
I'd thank in this specific situation, but where someone stops because it's my priority then it's no thanking.

In what world would you NOT acknowledge and thank them ??
Please go to Yorkshire and ask this question. No one waves in Yorkshire. Ever.
Leeds and Scarbrough, always waved at, and back. Well, I say waved, a raise of the hand from the wheel etc.
I get more annoyed with people flashing their BRIGHTNESS OF A SUPERNOVA high power LED main beams on modern cars, they're legit bright enough to be dangerous at the wrong angle.

Looks like I'm in a minority then lol. I simply don't understand why it's worth thanking someone for doing something that's completely unnecessary. It's not courteous in the same way as holding a door open, also they're not giving over right of way, or letting me get ahead, nor am I using their side of the road, nor am I in a big vehicle where I might appreciate the extra space etc. They're simply stopping for absolutely no reason. I just don't get it.

Its purely for selfish reasons, if you thank people when they wait (whether they are being stupid/need to actually wait or not) then next time they're in a similar situation they'll wait again because they know they'll get the appreciation.
Everyone has been in a situation where they've made an effort to do something that makes others lives easier and no one acknowledged it. The reaction is simple: " well I won't fucking do that again."

Australia.
You can tell who's foreign on the road over here, they're observant, skilled and courteous.

Is a raise of the hand so much effort? Whether or not it's helped you, they've
tried to help you, and that is what you're thanking them for. In some cases those gaps where, whilst there is space for two cars, are a bit tight and make you wince as the other driver squeezes past at a rate of knots. So these people may be making your life that little bit more relaxing.
We'll have to ask
@Sundayjumper how you deal with an unwanted gift at Christmas... must get awkward!

If it helps - in such situations I may give a wave of thanks whilst simultaneously quietly calling them a dicknose *
* other slurs may be used.

I totally understand the concept, and in general I'm a polite person, however it feels like thanking someone for being inefficient. It hurts my brain to do it.
I'd be thanking them looking like this:

I'd be thanking them looking like this:
when you drive every day, you learn these little things make a difference (and how fucking enraging it is when you make an effort to wait for someone and they don't wave).

When there's a driver who could have been an absolute dick, but they chose not to be, I thank them
I'd give the person in Gavs situation a wave too....as they might not be confident in their spatial awareness and otherwise might get a bit too close or even knock wing mirrors if they judge it badly.

I'm beginning to think that my perspective might have been clouded by living in London and that last time I commuted daily by car was in central London. A dude in Primrose Hill once threatened to kill me because I paused to let someone park on a narrow road

I remember driving down from university to go for an interview at a London law firm - one of my first experiences of driving around London. I was navigating round Aldwych when I got within 4 feet of a cyclist meandering around in the middle of three lanes, who then proceeded to pull alongside and spit at me through the open window. Nuff said I think.

I’ve never paid any attention to how often I actually acknowledge drivers before you started this, but I guess I’m overly polite because I even thank people for stopping at the give way traffic calming thingmajigs, I guess I’m just saying cheers for not being a cunt
