I have an estate and I have no intention of buying an SUV.

It cuts both ways though. Even if you don't want an SUV you're pretty much stuffed as the options for anything that isn't a saloon/coupe/convertible/hatch are pretty dire. Non-premium big estates and MPVs with anything but the weediest engines (JDM stuff aside) are thin on the ground.

They do. But they're rather premium and ugly. All academic for me anyway. Planning/hoping the Galaxy will last until two of the children are out of car seats. Then it'll be replaced with a large estate.

I don't see how/why premium is a negative? why wouldn't you want a premium car. If it's cost, just buy a slightly older one - premium cars last well.

It isn't a negative, but they tend to cost more to buy and/or to run. Buying an older one might negate the first to some extent, but not the second.

Edit: from what I've seen (not a full survey) the premium cars tend to have more sculpted seats which is great for the two in the outer seats, but not for the one in the middle.

You think BMWs are ugly (whereas the general accepted opinion is they are good looking), you make up weird excuses about sculpted rear seats, you think they're expensive to repair (when the reality is there are so many bmw specialists out there, they're actually pretty cheap to run, etc..

I'll ask you straight out then - do you like BMWs?

I've put a lot of miles on new BMW's and nothing breaks or falls off. They're brill and they drive well/better than their peers.

We've had an older E39 523i which was superb until the wife wrote it off. A snapped rear spring and consumables was all it needed. We're currently running an E90 320d auto (58 plate). Thus far it's been faultless. Changed brake disks and pads, engine flush, oil change, and swapped the filters when we got it nearly 2 years ago and it's due an oil service sometime soon.

Buy well and maintain and they're fine. Parts are fairly cheap and the cars are well engineered so changing stuff is pretty easy even for a numpty like me

As for the sculpted seat argument, you try fitting three people (even children) across them comfortably.

I wouldn't say this has particularly sculpted rear seats (530e) however the massive raised driveshaft tunnel wouldn't be comfortable to straddle.

Speaking as someone on their 10th BMW, I'm sorry what?! Current BMWs are gipping there isn't a nice looker in the range.
