I'd have been tempted by an Allroad but they stopped making them a couple of years ago and I think virtually every one in the UK is the lower-power engine and has very little in the way of spec. I've previously seen a couple of the higher power ones in Vorsprung spec with nice trim and they look great, but way overpriced and none for sale anyway.

My Allroad is a nice car and still has service pack and warranty running so it's not as if I needed to change. But I was a bit itchy and had been pondering an E400d estate or 530d xDrive Touring, yet neither did it for me; the Merc simply isn't as luxurious to be in as my CLS was and I feel like I've done BMWs, plus why is there no 540d here? Actually, there's no longer a 530d available to order now, even, but plenty of low mileage ones available.

The SQ8 diesel and Panamera V8 diesel both appealed, but I'd have to buy a bit older than I wanted and it would have still cost £60k minimum so I ruled them out.

Went to the Audi dealer this morning to look at an ex-demo S6 Avant in ultra blue, and to compare to a Q8 and A7/S7. Really liked the A7 but the boot gets quite flat once the hatch is closed so it's not as useful for sticking bikes in. The Q8 made me feel like a borrower, so much as I like the looks I won't ever have one. The S6 I went to see wasn't actually on side because it was being used by a director, so I looked at an RS6 and a lower spec A6 and knew I wanted the extended leather pack; which isn't on the demo car. But it turns out it is on the next intended demo car (black edition in black) which has just been built and is awaiting shipping to the UK around the end of April. They were willing to do a very keen deal because their target for April sales is high and this gets them off to a flying start. So 'cheap' finance (6.9% APR, not bad currently) and a chunky discount swayed me. Should be in my possession at the end of the month, which is my birthday, so a bit of a treat to myself.

So it is an A6 Avant Quattro 55TDi?

Sort of Is that how they're badged in Europe?

Bingo! Black edition in black with black leather. It has the Tour Pack which is the active cruise/steering stuff which I had in my V90 and I miss from time to time. Also has the important (and only £375 option) of extended leather, the Comfort and Sound pack (360 cameras, B&O stereo, multi-colour ambient lighting). No panoramic roof because I don't like them. I am wondering which small alloys I can find to fit

That looks like a good purchase.. good mpg? How big is the tank?

73l tank, so pretty much the same as my current A6. And economy is probably a bit worse but has potential to be better because it’s got mild hybrid gubbins.
