I was wondering earlier what older cars I like but have rubbish engines. I thought an old e30 316i or 318i would be a good candidate, then decided I’d just put a more modern engine in like one of the 24v e36 6 pots

Anything that is a PITA to maintain is fair game as far as I'm concerned.
Once the "character" outweighs the enjoyment, it's time to update
There's very few engines I'd get sentimental enough about to put up with hassle.
Yes I'm a barbarian.

This one might just be my own particular kink, but an 80s Camaro or Monte Carlo.

That sweet 80s boxiness and all the engines they came with were dog shit, so no worries about breaking something good.

Same for me.
The electric Ferrari 308 owner had it for decades, was hardly using it because stuff would keep going wrong with it, by electrifying he got a reliable fun car that he can use far more often. The engine and various bits were sold and used to keep other cars going that needed them.
Most of these conversions don't change engine mounts or need the shell chopped up so could always be put back later.
I'd prefer classic cars converted to EV and out being used, seen and enjoyed rather than being tucked away under a sheet in a warehouse until they need a complete overhaul to ever drive again.

Same, I get that classic car people get all teary about originality but I've always said the ideal would be like in Gattacca. Where everyone drives around in cool old cars that seem to run on Hydrogen or something.
If I could daily a Citreon DS without having to deal with 60 year old French technology, that'd be ideal.

You'd still want that oleo-pneumatic ride though surely?

I would in case of assassination attempts but TBH you could put it on airbags for the same effect.
I'm not convinced airbags would come even remotely close to being the same.

This was what I meant when I said if the engine was the heart of the vehicle it should be left alone. Nissan making an r32 gtr electric restomod. No rb26 but looking like it could have stupid speakers playing the noise of one. There’s not enough eye roll emojis in the world for that feature
