Oh, so close.

What you actually want it a VW Lupo.

very good condition... if you ignore the massive dents.

I think I'd rather have a maestro than that piece of crap!

Avoid all dealers at the £1500 price point. They're all fucking liars and chancers. Up your budget to £2 - £2500, buy private and you should get something decent.

My daughter is smitten with her Twingo GT.

If it's not a rot box, it low key might be one of the better suggestions. It's certainly not going to need half a grand of body control module  would be easy to work on, cheap to run, classic insurance alone could save literally thousands over the course of a couple of years, will have actual interior space, etc etc...

The flipside is, if it ends up in a ditch your kid is probably heading to intensive care, rather than walking away trying to think of ways to explain how they wrote the car off.

Worth checking the IG as someone said. Peugeots an Volvos used to be cheap but small stuff seems to attract a premium, Corsas etc. A 1.6 petrol S40 or V50 or C30 would be cool9ISh) safe, reasonably economical etc.

Think of what your typical boy racer would put backwards through a hedge. They’ll be higher to insure for that reason

Thanks to all of you for your valuable contributions based on real world knowledge and experience. I explained to Mrs Mike that the evo Hive Mind was hard at work and we'd get back to her with a decision asap. I want you to know I appreciate the time you took to reply.

I've been in a workshop all morning, came back to check on this thread and got a message from Mrs Mike who has apparently been out and bought a car she saw on Gumtree this morning when she was sitting having a coffee with a friend.

Its a 1 litre petrol Corsa in silver, "surprisingly nippy", one owner, 60,000 miles and has been hoovered. So there you go.

I don't know why I, sorry, we, bother.

Would a VW Up fall into your price range?

A wildcard would be an old (easy to maintain) classic. The insurance could be lower too. When I started my R-R apprenticeship in the early 1970s I had great fun in my Hillman Imp.

To be fair, I expect it'll be a more modern corsa, and I believe they are slightly less hateful.

Easy for you to say, but an all alloy OHC rear engined car was exotic among my mates A40s, Anglias and Minis at the time. :D

A 1 litre Corsa is a cruel punishment but if he’s not a petrol head then he may not give a crap as long as it has 4 wheels and goes from point A to B 🤷‍♂️

This was modern. If it’s the na 1l 12v engine it’s as asthmatic as they come
