A friend’s dad, who was (is still) a big cheese in the world of cardiology - published trials, presented big data at international conferences, etc - what would be called a key opinion leader, I suppose. Up until about ten years ago, he smoked. Somehow, a tobacco company got wind of this.

They offered him a million quid to put his name to some relatively innocuous statement about how cigarettes might not be that bad for you. Something like “there are some benefits to smoking.”

He thought hard about it. But concluded that he would never make any money again afterwards so declined the offer.
