I didn't think iTunes was that bad on the Mac - slow file transfers apart, it was always pretty reliable and easy to use. On the Mac side of things it only became messy when they started to expand it to also include tv, videos etc and it really suffered from bloat and trying to make it do things it just wasn't designed for.
I had one of those Sony MC-P10 which looked fantastic (as did most Vaio things circa 2000) but it was crippled with a proprietary file format, meaning it took fecking ages to convert and then transfer files. I also seem to remember it would heat up with sustained use to the point where it was too hot to hold.

Main issue is that you have to tell iTunes that tracks on a compilation are part of a compilation (it can't work it out based on them all having the same album name) so you
get one album per artist, containing one track each
Or alternatively, and equally annoying, if dealing with a series of compilations, 1 album containing 90 or 100 songs with 10 track 1’s, 10 track 2’s etc
See: Back to Mine
Is that how it works?
Or would it be one artist, under which 10 albums, each with a single track in?
I guess if the 10x album titles were the same, then you'd get artist, one album, then multiple tracks?

I’ve got a Nano, think it’s died. But it provided flawless service for years.
I remember my Sony Walkman phone being decent.
I’ve still got one of these in a drawer. 64mb storage, at the time enough for nearly two albums

I had a Touch as when I bought my first Saab it had a Denison (Dension?) cradle through the Harmon Kardon stereo but I do remember spending what felt like weeks uploading all my CDs.
I think when an update wiped out all the music that I hadn't downloaded I just gave up and my daughter left the iPod behind in a hotel. There is a iPhone 5S in the bread bin, I assume it is my wife's old one and I even have a locked 3 somewhere but I just stream though my phone finally after discovering Spotify a decade after everyone else.

I had an N-Gage for about 3 months, fucking useless at all the possible functions it was designed to fulfill.

I bought an iPod video ( colour screen!! ) in 2006, when I bought the e30 because Tim had fitted an iPod compatible stereo
That same iPod still sits in the dash connected to an alpine head unit in the e36.
I never had a major problem with iTunes, it was fine, and always liked owning the actual cds and ripping them to the quality / file size you wanted.
Have never got into streaming music

Gosh - I've got 2 iPods still in daily use!
I mostly run the living room and bedroom music off a Gen6 - better quality than bluetooth from my phone, and I don't accidentally interrupt the music if I'm browsing FB at the same time. Also nice to just pick it up, take it upstairs and carry on listening to the same album/playlist without the faff/expense of Sonos.
I also have a gen4 ipod touch in the car, as back in 2010, Mercedes saw fit not to include streaming functionality for their incar bluetooth. That one also theoretically doubles as a data logger in on of the Minis (via a Vbox and Harry's laptimer).

I don't have any physical media for music or a proper stereo any more. My phone, Tidal and Sonos do the job, am I doing it wrong?

It's my Birthday soon and I'm tempted by a Sonos 5
I have a really good Bluetooth speaker but it is limited by capacity and also, the accidentally interrupting the music thing that Nef's referred to
Ar they worth £500 quid though ??

I've got the Beam soundbar and it's great. I was originally going to buy other speakers to back it up but I don't need it.
As a way to play music at decent quality without loads of gear, I'd highly recommend them.

This, we bought the beam as a replacement for my big ol' cinema set up. Wanted to add more speakers for the rear and a sub but theres really no need. Quite happy with it just as it is ans it'll go pretty loud too
We've an old Play 5 in the kitchen which is brill and of course you can pair them up at a party to deafen the whole house !

I'm going to get a Beam to go with the new Telly but this is more for the Kitchen and Dining room which isn't a Kitchen Diner but 2 full sized rooms

Oh yeah, if I had a bigger house I'd definitely buy more for other rooms. Being able to sync them all together for party mode is a big plus imo.
