Mind blowing how people have to spend a couple of mortgages each month to send their kids to nursery. That and care homes are the businesses to be in!

i'm not convinced there's that much money made in nurseries, even at the crazy money they are. Theres at least 2 staff per fairly small group of kids (obviously the ratios change as they get older), plus cooks/food, cleaners, maintenance, managers, etc.. then there's a large building, usually in a fairly residential area to run. It all seems pretty close to me?

I agree. It should be better subsidised by government as ultimately they need the parents to go back to work, pay taxes etc.

Take a crude example :
50 kids
5:1 staff ratio
£500k fees incoming
£300k staff cost
£40k admin and insurances
£60k building costs
£100k gross left for the owner before anything else sucks it up (staff parental leave, sick cover etc, recruitment fees)

It’s not a lot of money considering you are ultimately responsible for the well-being of 50 children ten hours a day.

I like the Netherlands system, where parents work 4 days a week staggered, so kids are only in nursery 3 days a week.

I've never understood the mentality that it's better for kids that they spend as little time in nursery as possible. I'm pretty much the exact opposite about it!

Our Nursery was taking in over £1,000,000 a year and had about 10 staff I believe on a proper wage and a couple more on minimum.

Had kids about 2 years apart so had a painful year or so where it was over £3k a month It was a “nice” nursery, and 7am-6.30pm which we needed as we were both going into London every day.

Eased when eldest went to school, then covid shut everything - thankfully the fees stopped too. Put the youngest in the school nursery (just a pre-school year, 20 kids, school hours) and after the 30 hours was down to about £200pm.

For a fun exercise, add up what you’ve spent on childcare and think about how nice a car you could have bought instead
