That's a pretty big change from IT!

A couple of my friends in IT talk about getting out, but never do...well done on breaking out 👍

Excellent Dave! 8-)

There comes a point in life when you realise it's not about the money or the prestige or that next promotion. It's precisely why I quit contracting and took a mid-level perm role at Sky. Even though I effectively halved my take home pay, there's no pressure, I get no hassle, I just logon, work with some really nice people and log off again with the occasional fun day in the office. It's not even a 9 - 5, just a "so long as the work gets done" type thing. I've got private health care and excellent mental health support too. I was offered Principal Engineer and Senior roles and turned them down because I don't want the hassle - just a nice easy life doing I job I've always loved.

It's a good point, it's important to remember where you find happiness in life. For years I could never understand why my Dad turned down promotion to be head of his dept, it would have brought a small pay rise, as well as more work, responsibility and hours. But when you question where happiness is found in life, his choice makes a lot of sense. Sure, he earned a little less, but he was also able to keep his hours low, leave work at 5pm and spend more time riding bikes with his sons...

My dad made the same choice many moons ago - from running/owning manufacturing facilities, to getting out and just being a jobbing engineer. Simpler life.

At my age these days, I can easily understand the sentiment.

I'd love to quit my job and pursue my dream, if only I knew what my dream was!

Lamborghini test driver?

Same here really, there's no real world job that which grabs me that doesn't have more downsides to what I'm doing at the moment.

I’d happily spend my days building an LT5 powered UltimaRS, and tending to the rest of my limited vehicle collection in between road trips. I am unclear who would pay me in this scenario however. If anyone wants to start a JustGiving page…..

The only way you find out is by trying a LOT of different things.

The problem is there are things I enjoy doing, that in theory could be a paid job, but I'm rubbish at most of them... and I just imagine the reality of having to do it in a serious way to pay the bills would take a lot of the fun out of them as well. :x

I've discovered that hobbies rarely make good jobs unless you're very good at them, otherwise you're just gonna kill that hobby by needing to monetise it. But, that's also why you've got to try, so that you can find out

I would have a few cars to look after, a huge garden and fill it with lots of animals. Grow veg and herbs and be busy doing that kind of stuff.

I’d also build a giant train set in the loft and spend hours moving freight around.

Dave!

I think you're confusing retirement with an actual job that fits your interest!

Three day working week, four day weekend and free food. Sounds like a good gig to me!

Oh I’ll record it all and do it naked, no doubt a niche Japanese market for Hirsute Retirement Porn.
