On the livestream one of the NASA chaps was saying that the future will be even more amazing as Perseverance will be perched on a hill filming the landing of the rover which will then come up and collect its payload - and then film that blast into space.

I love the clarity of the imagery we're getting now, you always think of images from spacecraft being blurry and pixelated. I guess we've probably got the mobile phone industry to thank for moving the game on in terms of miniature lightweight cameras.

They mentioned in the livestream that the cameras weren’t anything special and you can still buy them online, JPL just bought some cameras from Point Grey (later acquired by FLIR) and did some slight modification internally to stop them off gassing in zero gravity and getting the image sensor dirty.

Apparently the images and video are all processed by the open source FFMPEG library, which I've used to make cat GIFs and transcode pron. I think the perseverance team might be getting more valuable use out of it
