My wife has an auto only license. My Dad was confused why we did that but I explained the same rationale as described earlier in this thread. We won't own another manual car, and as for rentals she's less likely to drive anyway as they'll be unfamiliar to her and probably on the wrong side of the road if on holiday.

I still maintain that the act of interrupting drive to change gear is detrimental to the thrill of driving. If cars had been single speed from their invention, we wouldn’t be adding manual gearboxes now to make them more fun.
But the interest is in minimising that interruption, smoothly, and at the appropriate time. Which can also mean DDC for downshifts, and H&T for braked downshifts. None of which is easy - hence the satisfaction when you get it right. Pulling a paddle has never replicated this for me - hence I tend to let autos just get on with it themselves.
DDC can sod off. Could never be arsed with that slow nonsense.
On the M140i, I use manuel on motorway trips as in Auto it always changes down if you use the throttle. It's got loads of torque so will pull from slow speed in 8th with no problem. I also use it when out for a blast so I have the gear I want when I want it.

That would drive me absolutely potty. We had a Mazda6 that did that, sometimes on a motorway with a slight incline it'd drop to 3rd (5 speed 'box) and you'd be screaming along at 4,000+ rpm for no reason at all.
And the OBC measured fuel consumption in litres per 100 miles. An absolutely terrible, half-assed car.

I like the throttle behaviour in sport but gearbox becomes too eager. Plus I like the feeling of the torque building as the turbo spools up as you pull from low revs.
