Re: Car browsing after a few cans.
I thought the 190 engine was meant to be a bit shit anyway, or can the switchover point be fiddled with using aftermarket stuff to change a bit earlier and make it a bit more useful?
Cheers, Harry
Re: Car browsing after a few cans.
Not sure about 'a bit shit', it's a good engine. Some big-wig at Toyota engineering named it when asked what was their biggest achievement in an engine.
However not many make 189bhp at the fly when tested; the early JDM engines are about the only ones that do.

You mean you've never heard of a SARD MC-8? Oh, not that LS...

Pretty cool, you'd hope the race cars were less of a lash-up than that! I guess they just chucked it together to satisfy the regs.

It's not a looker is it
But clearly a pretty herculean effort to start at Le Mans at all
2ZZ is by all accounts pretty reliable. Has anyone here had the NA version in an Elise? Every prick compares it to the B18C6 so it gets a bad rap.

But an NA Elise is at least faster than my wife's middle of the range diesel estate.speedingfine wrote: Sun Dec 13, 2020 8:15 pm It's not a looker is itBut clearly a pretty herculean effort to start at Le Mans at all

Are you saying a sports car not a sports car if it's doesn't have a pwr of above say 164bhp/tonne (original Elise)
What is the RichB cut-off figure

Im sure it's good fun to Chuck around a corner, but I don't get how they can make something light with a decent sized engine accelerate so slow. Is it really high geared or something?speedingfine wrote: Sun Dec 13, 2020 8:49 pm Are you saying a sports car not a sports car if it's doesn't have a pwr of above say 164bhp/tonne (original Elise)What is the RichB cut-off figure

Fair enough Rich, most of the 0-60 calculators come out at 6.6 seconds to 60 for that PWR.

I think we're talking slightly at odds.speedingfine wrote: Sun Dec 13, 2020 9:18 pm Fair enough Rich, most of the 0-60 calculators come out at 6.6 seconds to 60 for that PWR.
I'm saying a standard MR2 with 140bhp is lame.
Though if I was going to all the hassle/expense of an engine swap to a 190 in a lightweight MR2 I'd want it to be faster than a standard CTR.

Maybe shit is a bit harsh, I seem to remember them criticising the lack of midrange and the cam switchover being like one of the older vtecs where you had to smash it to the redline constantly or it would drop out of the power when you changed gear.mr_jon wrote: Sun Dec 13, 2020 7:14 pm Not sure about 'a bit shit', it's a good engine.
