My Defender can run on chip fat though so aslong as I make regular visits to the north I should have a good supply.

I have been developing an idea for a book for a good few years now. I used to spend a lot of time in the car commuting so you have to fill your mind with something

However, over time, the world and its sensibilities have shifted somewhat and as a result, I’m not 100% sure the world wants a book by a slightly overweight, middle aged Irishman who’s main protagonist is a Female, Gay, Career driven Police Detective

Perhaps it would work better as a screenplay

I'll probably tinker with the 928 but I don't think I'll ever fully retire. I've no immediate plans to retire but I have given thought to winding things down a bit. If my wife gets this promotion and the COVID recruitment freeze at Sky ends which means I can transition to perm, I may think about going part time.

I'm still probably 25-30 years away from retirement, so maybe I'll have finished the house DIY projects I've started by then...

Synthetic petrol is already perfectly possible, it's just not economically viable yet. It's only carbon + hydrogen and there's no shortage of those. Needs huge amounts of renewable electricity before it's practical.

I've always assumed I'd keep a toe in the industry and do a bit of consulting work once I'm finished with the full time stuff. So I'd imagine I'll be working for 30 years or so health permitting.

I was more thinking about life after the death of our hobby. It will be interesting to see what happens to the values of nice cars, but I'm glad I'm not sitting on anything valuable.

I don't think I'll ever not be interested in cars tbh. I'm maybe not as interested in EV tech as I am in tinkering around under the bonnet of an old banger (requote at will) but I'm still curious to see how the tech will evolve and change as time goes on.

I remember someone saying years ago that the advance of EV tech doesn't necessarily mean the end of IC, just a change in purpose. They compared it with horses not being used as working animals anymore as the IC engine gained popularity.

Even if some places ban the burning of fossil fuels altogether, there will still be places you can go to use them. Nice wee private resort with a race track in the Caribbean for the Ferrari package holiday experience .

Yeah, to be honest I think some sort of mandated GPS tracking or speed limiting is a much bigger issue for cars as a hobby than EV. I'd quite happily thrash a Taycan around, but if you have to drive like a nun, then it's a bit of a waste of time.

What age do you lot imagine retiring at? I retired at 54, and my partner, who is 7 years younger than me, trumped me by finishing at 53. I guess I'd always opt for owning more of my own time as opposed to a larger company pension.

As for what to do, I bugger about in Porsches, waste time here online, read too many car mags, do crosswords to keep mentally active, go out for a coffee at various venues every day, meet up with friends for early doors beers, plan holidays and short breaks, etc.

You just must be considerably more successful than some of the rest of us Paul!

I'm going to be paying off a mortgage most of the time.

Not really a hobby but I’d like to move to somewhere warmer but still have a base in the UK.
