You replaced a Golf R didn’t you, Scott? As a direct comparison, do you have a preference?scotta wrote: Sun Nov 15, 2020 2:55 pmExactly why I went for the 240 Jobbo.Jobbo wrote: Sun Nov 15, 2020 2:43 pm A definite no-brainer choice - when even the next Merc C63 AMG will have a 4-cylinder engine, it could be the last opportunity to buy a 6-cyl in a car this size.
Auto or manual though? Can’t believe you’d omit this important info. Which matters very deeply to something like two people on this forum![]()

Re: New car
That was a big part of ordering my 140. I've had 63000 very happy miles in it so far. They're a superb daily and great fun for a thrash. Never gotten tired of the effortless performance either.scotta wrote: Sun Nov 15, 2020 2:55 pmExactly why I went for the 240 Jobbo.Jobbo wrote: Sun Nov 15, 2020 2:43 pm A definite no-brainer choice - when even the next Merc C63 AMG will have a 4-cylinder engine, it could be the last opportunity to buy a 6-cyl in a car this size.

Re: New car
Great choice. Good combo of a decent daily and a bunch of fun.
Re: New car
I don’t know about the 140 but my 135 was surprisingly good on fuel too.
Re: New car
The best cars are the ones you plan what to do with before you even buy them so sounds like it will be a hoot.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: New car
Swings and roundabouts. The centre stage of the 240 is as you’d expect the engine and drivetrain but the golf certainly handles and is damped better. Brakes are much of a muchness. Hifi in the golf (after I upgraded it with the dealer fit helix amplifier & sub) sounded much better than the factory Harman Kardon in the bmw. Golf was manual and the bmw is the ZF so no direct comparison there. Electronics wise the upgraded LCI interface in the bmw is 5 years newer than the system in my MK7. Mines had the old dials and radio with no sat nav. So for functionality it’s a bit better as it’s got Spotify and Audible clients that work through the I drive. Performance- in the dry the 240 is definitely quicker - it will run with an E90 M3 & a 992 Carrera. In the wet it wouldn’t see what way the 4x4 golf went. Traction in the R was pretty much un-burstable even in the wet.Jobbo wrote: Sun Nov 15, 2020 4:15 pmYou replaced a Golf R didn’t you, Scott? Ultimately I ruined the golf. The steering rack was knocking and VW wanted a grand for the part - Through TPS with a big mates discount. I found a company in Glasgow that specialised in steering racks that offered to do a new rack for £600 fitted. I checked reviews and the place was golden and genuine. So I went ahead with the job. Within 10 feet I knew i had made a mistake. The rack they fitted was obviously not for a Golf R and was much higher geared. The R rack did lock to lock in 2 turns. This took three. Also changing the drive modes did nothing to change the weight of the steering. I drove it in Race mode constantly as I liked the heavier feel. After that it lost the sharp feeling of the steering which ruined the car for me so it got sold. Had I fitted the proper rack there’s a probability I still would have it as I loved that car.

Mines is unbelievable. It did 48mpg back home to Scotland from silverstone last year.Zonda_ wrote: Sun Nov 15, 2020 4:58 pm I don’t know about the 140 but my 135 was surprisingly good on fuel too.
Re: New car

Good cars, always felt the gearbox sometimes didn’t like peak torque, also I did a good 100m power slide, which was amusing.
Mine had the tarty 19”s and I always found it all went to pieces above 8/10ths.
Not a car I ever would just take out for a drive, but a great daily!

Re: New car
That sums it up for me.
Rapid cars though and pretty practical.
The Birds upgrades look fantastic.
Re: New car
I've had two diesel estates over the last 12 odd years
I think it'll be unlikely I'll be getting to 8/10ths in the M140 anytime soon
Let alone beyond!

Had a manual M135i for just over 4 years and currently have had the M240i auto for 3 years.Coaster1 wrote: Sun Nov 15, 2020 1:49 pm![]()
Anyone tried both manual and auto? Is manual a waste of time in these cars?
Overall I prefer the auto as it's a better day to day prospect and the manual just didn't make it worth while on a spirited run. It's action was okay, I just found it was too long geared (70mph in 2nd, 105mph in 3rd) so didn't get to use it as much as I'd like. Whereas the auto is much shorter geared (55mph in 2nd, 82mph in 3rd, 106mph in 4th) so in 'manual' mode I get to go through the gears more often.

Does sound like Auto really suits the car.
Would love to have a go in the M140 and Golf R at some point.

Yeah, modern autos have come on so far in the last few years.Coaster1 wrote: Tue Nov 17, 2020 1:39 pmCheers!Holley wrote: Mon Nov 16, 2020 11:37 amHad a manual M135i for just over 4 years and currently have had the M240i auto for 3 years.Coaster1 wrote: Sun Nov 15, 2020 1:49 pm![]()

The (ubiquitous) ZF 8 speed is so good (and as mentioned previously) can be further tuned to make it even more snappy if required.
It's going to be a long week waiting for the new car!

Re: New car
Nice. Really liked my M135i, and the autobox is brilliant (had DSGs before and after, not as good).
Approved, despite having the second best colour (first is Valencia Orange, obvs).
