AT is quite useful for this sort of thing, On top of price, age and mileage, you can select filters for estate, 40/50mpg, acceleration, Etc...

I always do this when musing in new cars, then I buy the BMW I was originally looking at.

I have so many AT Saved Searches set up it's unbelievable.
XF Sportbrake looks a very good shout.

V6 S4 Avant? Surely could do 32mpg on the cruise?

XF still looks rather old manish to me, but it might be just the thing for what I'm doing. Well, right up to the point where I but a BMW instead

Just buy an F31 - This is the way.

ETA - Do however try and get one with xenon headlights as the standard halogens are "Fucking shit" [mention]Rich B[/mention] Will attest to this fact as well.

Be careful would by my advice. The BMW 4cyl diesels (and petrols for that matter) have their issues not least spontaneous combustion or timing chain failures. IME they also aren't that great on economy. Hence why, imo, if you're going the BMW route the 6cyl models make much more sense. You don't give up that much economy to the 4cyl ones, they seem to be better built, and they're a hell of a lot more refined.

in the two years we have had the F31 we've put 20k on it

Other than servicing and tyres its cost me £23 for a new door speaker and It will do 55mpg on a run with 3 adults including my 100kg brother.

Id rather have a 4 cylinder newer F31 than an older E90 6 cylinder with more miles.

Each to their own, clearly, but the 4cyl units unarguably do have a piss poor record and have done for a long time now. Spontaneous combusion and timing chain failure are a thing and at the very least the relevant recalls should be checked if he goes to look at a car. And 20k over 2 years is nothing compared to 25k p/a. I just don't think the BMW 4cyl is a good choice for high mileage. That's before you get to NVH etc.

You can just about pick up the 6cyl F31s with under 100k on the clocks for the budget. They'll probably hold their value better than the 4cyl models if previous generations are anything to go by, which makes up for some of the economy loss/increased price.

Ours has soldiered on well for the last 3+ years - it had a new clutch and a rebuilt gearbox on warranty though as the 2nd gear synchro went.

It's true my grandparents bought diesel Peugeots nearly new and ran them into the ground. The engine was usually the last thing standing

My grandad still had the mk2 306 they bought 20 odd years ago when he died a couple of months ago.

Scuumb is my advice, we all know we are going that way. I've got a pack of butter mints firmly wedged in the centre console.

F31 330d circa 100,000 miles. Aside from the usual buy on condition, is there anything I should be looking for? From my research so far they seem pretty reliable, even the one make forums aren't too full of doom and gloom.
