😔

The reason I want to do this now is my dad is off for a very big operation due to a blood clot breaking up and filling his lungs with bits of it.

He has to go get his lungs flushed out on a bypass machine in Cambridge and that will hopefully make him better, but its made me realise we need to do things together now, even if its not possible to be together in the same household.

And sometime the little things make a difference to take his mind off things, and maybe mine too.

And the alcohol can't hurt 😂

This is correct. I have about 20 bottles, actually drink them fairly rarely and usually only one or two in a sitting to avoid doing a Jobbo.

Same as with anything, the good stuff is notably better. By the time it's collectible you're probably into diminishing returns and whisky wankery for the sake of it. Current faves are Bruichladdich Classic Laddie, anything Glenfarclas do 12yrs or older, including their 105 which is 65% and definitely needs water, and anything Macallan do. Don't underestimate Japanese whisky too, easily on par with Scottish stuff if you look at what's typically recommended.

I do like a good single malt - Scotch or Irish but rarely have any in the house.

There's always a bottle of Woodford Reserve in the cupboard though..

I was a big fan of Japanese whisky too - I'm fortunate have had 2x bottles of the Yamazaki 18 a few years ago - when it was £90 a bottle.

Good luck even finding one now. Let alone affording one.

Japanese whisky has been a victim of its own success - it's so hyped and expensive now, I've basically given up on it.

Although you can sometimes find a bottle of the Hibiki Harmony for (inflated but) not entirely unrealistic prices.

I like pretty much any whisky except peated ones.

Also love a bourbon too.

Peated whisky can get in the sea.

Laphroaig is possibly the only drink I've ever had that I couldn't finish without downing it very quickly.

Well that and Minute Maid Pickle Beer in Texas 🤮

Barry you uncouth bastard

Higher proof stuff does need water dropping in - I only know from being taught by better drinkers than me - and yes one did run a pub and go blind.
This is the thing, everyone has their own preference, so take all the rules with a pinch of salt IMO. I get acid reflux very easily so often need to add ice, just to claim things down.

I used to be very much a fan of the peated varieties but must say I'm moving away from them somewhat these days.

O/T but an interesting new discovery I made recently was Grappa Barricata - essentially barrel aged Grappa which is somewhat of a cross between grappa and whisky taste-wise. Dangerously drinkable

I get acid reflux quite often, and as a result didn't used to drink neat spirits. I got into rum tho and from there into others. Weirdly I stopped suffering acid reflux with neat spirits!

It's all down to taste tho yes. I tend to prefer it clean and have only added water to one whisky we had which was over 60%. But then inhad a rum that was over that and it was fine neat.

I remember taking a bottle of 151 proof Goslings to a party once. I started off drinking it with ginger beer but ended up just drinking it neat. Dangerously easy to drink

Having read and commented on this thread earlier, I've now ordered myself a bottle of that Hibiki and also a bottle of Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 😀

Oh I do love Grappa... I fell in love when I was working in Italy. Again, I always have a bottle in the cupboard. LI prefer a drier based grappa, rather than the sweeter variety’s but I’ve zero idea about brands. I tend to get it at Airports and go for a nice looking bottle...

I bought a bottle of that laphroaig back from France for a mate (it was cheap at the time and his boss loved it) and a couple for his boss. He liked a whisky and coke and wanted to get a few single malts for drinking straight on occasion. I remember when he first tried it, he was like ‘what the fuck? £40 a bottle?’ He even tried drowning it with coke and still couldn’t drink it. The bottle gets trotted out to torture people people when we have few drinks now.
