Nice. I assume it is, in some manner, a little fucked?

It's not be a Harry car if it's not a little bit fucked in some manner :)

No real story,

My dad had several, mainly when I was too young to remember. I’ve always liked them, everyone seems to say how fun they were, and I spotted this one at the right time so thought I’d take a punt.

It’s a 1980 car, (Same age as me ) one of the last chrome bumper cars (which I prefer) has the best engine out of the normal range, and I like that it’s a four door so I can enjoy it as it is without being tempted to try and make it sporty.

Wouldn’t mind some lows and wheels though ;)

It was zeibarted (waxoiled) from new, exported to Malta then came back two years later, hence the Y reg, was used around London until 1998, was then in storage until 2011.

The person I bought it off had bought a different one but got it home and found it was an utter shed, then bought this one and recommissioned it with parts from his crap one.

He had intended using it as his daily driver, but due to Covid he’s working from home for the foreseeable and has too many other projects so decided to let it go.

It’s far from mint, certainly a 20 yard car, but it’s very solid, and very honest. The brakes are awful, don’t know if it’s anything wrong with them or just ‘because old car’ and the carb needs a tune. It starts and idles well and is fantastic when up to speed, it gathers speed surprisingly well from 60mph with a nice bark, but on part throttle and in the mid range it can cough and splitter a bit.

The plan is to use it as it is with the odd little bit of tinkering here and there. It it starts costing too much, is no longer fun, or looks like it’s turning into another project it’s getting sold!

Mic, they are the ‘super’ badges. They’re pretty faded and rubbish looking, but replacements are £90 a pair, which I’m not paying for a couple of bits of vinyl. I’ll probably buy some and cut a pair out by hand.

It was about an hour further down from Exeter  but yeah. Some of the traffic on the a30 and m5 wasn’t a lot of fun, but on the more open stretches it was fine.

Didn't have to. There is, as we all know, only one correct size of tracks.

‘Very solid’? A Sud? Hmmm...

In 1994 I worked at Lucas for the summer doing R&D on brakes, and the chap I worked for had a white Sud which he’d owned since new in the early 70s. He took me out for lunch in it one day. It was definitely lighter than it left the factory, despite the tape covering the numerous speed holes in the bodywork. I tried to wind the window down and the winder broke in my hand. And this was a well looked after, one owner car half as old as yours.

I can only wish you good luck 😄

Yeah but if this is made from the best bits of two Alfasuds it should be a half decent car. Only half, though. ;)

Harry, that looks great. 8-)

That’s really cool Harry, didn’t realise that Alfasuds had boxer engines. Every day’s a school day.

Yeah, basically a copy of the beetle engine / gearbox arrangement just swung round 180 degrees and stuck at the front.
