Not really the same is it. Pikey is a 100% negative term, like "thief" or "criminal". whereas "gay" is a word that has been misused in a negative way.

I don't think it is a stretch - even amongst travellers the actual group referred to by the word is not strictly defined and, being slang, the meaning has changed over time.
