Traxxas stuff is the best I've come across for surviving impacts but nothing is indestructible or 100% kid proof. The OP doesn't mind doing a bit of spannering with the kids so of course repairs are to be expected. I can't think of a single brand offering kits which can withstand constant hammering into a wall, that's reserved for a kiddies 'my first RC' with sub 5mph top speeds and big rubber bumpers.

Sticking a bit of sponge across the front of whatever kit they go for would be a better suggestion

Get a HBX rampage.

I have 2 for the boys, no issues yet, have a switchable throttle, are quick and easy to control being 4wd.

Also the remote is small enough which is very important for kids.

I think I bought 2 for £65 and haven’t broken a single part.

They shit over all the tamiyas I’ve tried and are small enough to play with in the house too.

I've been looking at getting an RC car and building it recently and you guys are certainly causing some encouragement. What are the thoughts about Nitro cars and something like the one below?

Great as a starter set into Nitro or something for just a bit of fun. You'll get the bug and want another one before long

I converted a nitro to electric.

They are slower, noisy, expensive, a pain to run and leave an oily mess.

I’d stick with electric....

Nothing beats nitro if you have the space to run them. It is slower, noisier, more expensive to run and much more prone to go wrong but it’s that same reason you want a petrol car with a big loud engine and the electric one gives you erectile dysfunction.
An on song nitro revving to 30,000 rpm, changing a gear, then doing it again, that’s the shit. Also it provides you with a good edjumacation on how 2 strokes work, although this will likely be useless as they’re going the way of the dodo.

Speed for speed a brushless will be "more expensive" on initial outlay but over time less expensive due to the cost of nitro fuel and replacement parts on the linked model from Modelsport. But Nitro is far more fun. And it's the only internal combustion engine outside of Top Fuel drag racing where the engine internals are serviceable items

The best is to have one of each, but start with Nitro. If you can run a Nitro car properly you're over qualified for an electric, which becomes the convenience/specialist powertrain.

Kit, although shell comes in a solid colour so no painting. It's a "reissue" but using a DT02 chassis.

Finally got this finished, not quite box art colours but paints are hard to find at the moment. Really enjoyed building it. Amusing enough on the 380 motor for now (although it won’t light up the rears) but I’ll get a 540 when stuff is easier to get hold of.

Just checked and I do, it’s a tamiya motor they called their torque tuned. Been lightly run but nothing hard. Ideal upgrade for a dt02 and you can race it at historic events too. All my kit is running brushless and lipo now, no that I ever use it, all my are very much shelf queens now.

I remember at my RC peak I bought several just to be shelf queen's. C Class DTM and Afla 155 DTM were 2. Never even fitted motors

I think I dropped £350 on the egress when it came out and my top force cost a bit too, the egress is lovely with loads of cnc and carbon but expensive to repair so it only gets gentle runs on the field, not actually got around to running the top force yet. My bigwig had been run but again only lightly. They look too good to run and damage. The lunchbox and my modern neo scorcher got run a fair bit but I was also racing a Schumacher cougar sv2 (really badly) at the time so that got most use. The thing with tamiya is that when you don’t run them they are great ‘man ornaments’ where the Schumacher gets chucked in a cupboard and sold.
I’d like to add to the collection in my office but I’m low on space and funds for them.

I’ve got four figures in one of my RC trucks, it was a great project and it’s a very capable but of kit but it only goes on the grass in the garden on the odd occasion. I then spent £550 on one I can use out and about which I’ve now dropped a couple of hundred quid on to make it as capable as my almost shelf queen

Luckily I never had the money as a young teen, all mine were presents. I saved money for ages and changed the A-arms as well as the running gear on a truck to aluminium. That’s when I learnt why it’s actually better for many stressed components to be nylon
