And good to drive - they’re very popular with club motorsportists.
E36 Compact ? Getting harder to find but they’re easy to work on and no problems with parts.

Yeah, to be fair, even the 200 it's based on (I'd not go back that old though, rust etc) corner flat and steer pretty nicely. As a first shed, if insurance is cheap you could do far worse.

My mates first car was a shagged Suzuki Jimny. Absolute piece of piss to work on, means he's not afraid of doing his own oil changes and brake jobs (which were black magic to him beforehand).

I’d agree with getting something you can work on.
Just get something cheap and basic. If he decides he wants something nicer he can get it later.
