Beany - as far as I can tell they were aimed at people that couldn't afford a Bristol. Similar styling and build but with an Alvis designed engine instead of the big Yank V8 lump in the Bristol. Only 150bhp from the triple-carb 3 litre straight six but it'll do 120mph and that was pretty respectable at the time.
He wanted a Bristol really but a decent one is £40k+ and he just couldn't justify that to himself. This has the same air of gentlemanly style at half the price. I'll definitely have to borrow it some time.
Beany, the Scimitar is not a saloon.

There's a very vague line between 2-door saloon, and coupé. I think it's down to an arbitrary point of view based on the angle of the rear window.
The Scimitar SE4 was a coupé:
But the Alvis is a saloon:
Both two doors, four seats, with a boot (i.e. not a hatchback)

No, it's bothered me in the past. The E30 was a saloon but the E36 was a coupé. I guess my Compact is a coupé ?? But I'd just call it a hatchback. Calling it a coupé is trying too hard.
Looking at the Scimitar & Alvis pics next to each other, I'm leaning towards the amount of rear headroom. If you can comfortably fit adults in the back, it's a saloon. If the rear seats are fairly useless it's a coupé (aka 2+2).

I always thought it was to do with window surrounds. If its frameless its a coupe, if it has a frame its a 2 door saloon. Think that works for e30 (saloon) v e36 (coupe) and also e36/46 compacts (both saloons/hatchbacks).
You still come across tricky examples though - on the above logic, all 911s pre 996 would be two door saloons
If you apply it to 3 box shapes it probably still works though - though possibly not for older, quirkier stuff.

I confess a soft spot for Avis as my Grand father had a TA14 when I was a nipper.

Engine is a straight six and quite a tight fit with the triple carbs, very narrow engine bay. Still on a dynamo charging system.

Interesting trivia/coincidence.
The car was built in 1966, and at the time the list price was £3,750.
My parents bought their first house in 1966, a 2-up 2-down in Molesey, costing them £3,250.
A new Alvis back then was pretty bloody posh.

From memory that is similar to my late dad's '65 s-type.
Other comparisons - it was a 3.8 manuel with 220bhp but top end was a similar 120mph.
Driving it was a huge event - fabulous - despite speeds remaining very low. Made a fantastic noise.
Unfortunately, after years of weekly use followed by one of no use at all, it was insured, mot'd and taxed for our honeymoon, then tucked back up in the garage to decat and seize up.
he got rid a couple of years before he died - lots of rust, leather decay and seized clutch etc. Tragic really
