I'm quite happy with my short Rab synthetic jacket tbh, down is great until it gets wet. I have a proper waterproof outer layer for really bad weather. Couldn't care less if its fashionable or not.

Never had the down in either of my Berghaus get wet even in torrential rain.

I tend to layer up these days, rather than wear my "Big Coat". Thermal, Fleece, Light Down Jacket and Gore-Tex shell if it's raining or particularly windy.
However, when it's really cold (which only seems to be when camping and hill walking in the Lakes or Wales over Winter), the "Big Coat" comes out. 800 Loft Rab Down Coat - Mines 4 or 5 years old now but the current equivalent is the Rab Infinity. Awesome coat but, if I'm honest, a little too warm for the UK...

Am off to the big smoke shortly and will pick something up no doubt, I have the layers already for hiking but fancy a nice warm one to watch the kids run or play hockey etc without resorting to my manky old high vis.
I did find one expedition jacket hat was £1400!!!! For a bloody coat!

Is constantly dressing like you're going on an arctic expedition from Nov to Feb just something that happens when you have kids?
Folk cutting about the shopping centre wearing duvets because it's 5 degrees outside

I just put the fleece lining in my generic NorthFace jacket today. It was lovely and warm as i de-iced the car. Unfortunately I don’t look like I’m dressed to cross the Andes whilst wearing it, so the Dads here probably won’t be interested

This reminds me I better put my short winter breakdown survival kit in the boot. 250 litres of water, 17 flares, enough MREs to last 2 weeks, 4 different knives, 20 lighters, various tinder and kindling....

I've had a North Face McMurdo Parka for a few years and it's great but a bit overkill for the UK as it's rarely cold enough for it.

You feel the cold a lot more once you get older. And kids accelerate ageing. Ergo, yes.
Must say that the cold doesn't usually bother me, but I'm really feeling it this year. Just checked and mine's the Marmot Solaris, and it kept me nice and warm this morning with outside temps at -3

Thermoball north face for me, light, warm, rain proof. Yet to need anything warmer in our climate, only gripe is that I would like more matte colours, the shiny ones look cheap.

I often wear it with just a t-shirt underneath and I'm plenty warm enough. But I've also worn it with a couple of base layers in -50°C and been reasonably comfortable.
