I wanted to give myself a little bit of context around the number of deaths. I’ve seen people compare COVID-19 to flu, but I just wondered what the general number of deaths were and how much impact Coronavirus was having.

In 2018 there were 616,014 deaths from all causes, which is an average of 1688 deaths per day. That’s pretty eye opening considering we’re now at 1000 deaths per day from Coronavirus.

Big shout out to the NHS and all other bits of the country. Good to see it hasn’t all gone to shit yet and we haven’t resorted to chucking bodies in plywood boxes in a trench.

Yes, I think I saw a stat the other day that even at 600 deaths a day C19 was the largest single cause of death in the country.

Some documentary that was in BBC4 the other day said there was 6000 deaths in the UK from flu in 2015. Not sure how much that fluctuates year on year...

“Public Health England estimates that on average 17,000 people have died from the flu in England annually between 2014/15 and 2018/19. However, the yearly deaths vary widely from a high of 28,330 in 2014/15 to a low of 1,692 in 2018/19. Public Health England does not publish a mortality rate for the flu.”

There's an interesting thread over on one of the nerdy websites, where someones been tracking average numbers of deaths (for all sources) from the last few years and comparing it to this year:

Although I suspect that people staying indoors is off-setting this (accidents, etc). On the BBC one of the articles talking about the reduction in A&E visits, one of the doctors said they'd seen a 50% reduction in A&E visits for heart attack patients are these people thinking "I'm having a heart attack, but I don't wanna go to A&E just in case I catch CV" ?

I’d have thought most heart attacks are caused by some sort of strenuous activity- important thing to remember about this is you don’t generally have a heart attack during the activity, it’s a couple of hours later, so people don’t necessarily think that’s the cause. Given that people are staying in there’s not the activity level to cause the heart attack in the first place

Apparently, according to the paramedic that came out when my neighbour died, going to church is a surprisingly big one (at least in terms of ambulance call outs).
It was a Sunday morning, and he had arrived super-quick. I'd commented that we'd managed to time it well, just between the drunken Saturday night injuries and the Sunday afternoon sports injuries. Apparently, they get a big spike on Sunday mornings from all the old people who literally haven't moved further than between their bed and living room chair all week suddenly going to church on a Sunday slipping/tripping/just keeling over.

In related news, Mrs. Nef's mum (79) managed to fall off a pavement yesterday and break her hip. Not the greatest time for an extended stay in hospital
