From experience of 911s and circuit noise tests, testers tend to be lenient as they read high compared to other cars due to the mechanical noise of the engine being near to the test kit.

Yeah most seem to be ok. Though some MSV circuits can be arsey.

Ferrari passed its MOT with no advisories. Even Ferrari were surprised!

Yeah, not on track or anything. Heading to Exmoor so stopped by to get the noise test done for future reference.

5 days and 840 miles into running the M140i and I'm loving it. Once I'd got the first 200 miles out of the way I started to wind the wick up and am enjoying giving it a right good spanking! It really is a cracking car. The engine sounds superb and it goes like the clappers. Traction is very good but gets a little lively in the wet. Saying that though, everything is controllable and nothing catches you by surprise (yet ).

For all the boring bits of driving I do on the motorway it has been wonderful, it's very quiet and comfy undoubtedly helped by specifying the adaptive dampers but when the opportunity presents itself it becomes a different animal altogether. It's been described as an 8/10th's car and I think that's fair and it suits my requirements. Lets face it I shouldn't be doing 10/10th's on the road anyway and I'm not going to be doing track days as it's a company car so a Civic Type R / Focus RS wouldn't suit my needs plus the BMW is a nice place to spend time and do family duties.

I'm very, very happy with the choice I made!

BIK isn't too bad because it's a petrol so only about £30 a month more than getting another same spec C Class again. Also, while I have the option of getting something daft then get something daft . Our car list will be changed at some point in the future by our evil overlords and then it'll be SE Passats like everyone else at our parent company

Finally got around to tackling the stuck wheel bolt on the Compact. It was one of the OEM security bolts, and was sufficiently stuck that I snapped the splined adaptor ! Some drilling, quite a bit of drilling actually, and a moderate amount of swearing got the job done.

But I think I got carried away after that.




Pretty much every part of the suspension is knackered so I'm going replace the lot. And I may as well get the quicker E46 rack while it's all stripped down.

The wings are off because the original nose cone & n/s wing were damaged, I've finally tracked down replacements in the right colour, and the o/s too for good measure, they'll be here on Monday.

Touareg news - I fitted new front ARB bushes today, and the new lower suspension arms arrived too.

So - somewhat tardily but as promised - here's a short vid of the 911 mit new testes. Sound quality through the Canon isn't great but you get the gist. Much louder and with some amusing crackles. Car wasn't cold but also not quite fully warmed up so this is only revving up to circa 4k.



Turns out that the hamfisted oafs at H&S have somehow managed to break / disable both exhaust actuators so that it no longer has a quiet mode. By giving myself carbon monoxide poisoning prodding at the underside of the car whilst running, it is clear both flaps do work if you manually push them shut but the near side doesn't work on the button at all and the drivers side closes 80% of the way but not all the way shut... meaning its no quieter but just rattles

Anyway - I've become a bit addicted to the new Asbo volume level (predictably)... meaning I'll get 9e to fix the flaps so I can have a quieter mode back again when needed and leave the bypass pipes in place for a bit a least.

I also tried to get a vid of a good flyby with the new setup but hamfistedly I recorded it on a hillside road on a blustery day so its not really useable. Will try and capture something better in the near future.

Also managed to hit 30mpg on a steady run back to London from Yorkshire so economy is still decent... if you're in to that kind of thing

Why not go back to H&S and threaten to get all legal on their backsides ?

Or maybe start out by asking them to just fix what they've broken?

You’ve made your 997 sound like a Honda Civic with a Peco exhaust ?

Yes in an ideal world that’s exactly what I’d do but I’ve doubts as to whether they even realise what they’ve done / have the knowledge to fix it and they aren’t that close to where I live.

I don’t have the time or energy to take it to them and then also take it to 9e (also not that close or easy to get to) in the following couple of weeks to get serviced and other work done particularly as if I have to leave it with them I have to arse about getting trains and taxis back and forth. Given it has to go to 9e anyway I will get them to deal with it.

In this case the time expenditure and general hassle really just doesn’t make it worth it (unless of course it transpires they’ve done something which is a very costly fix in which case I may have to take it up with them). The actuators are only £80 each if they do need to be replaced.

One at least hopefully just needs adjusting as it is partially closing, so I’m hoping it’s not going to be astronomical job and who knows, could even be just re-attaching vacuum lines they’ve clumsily knocked off/damaged.

Had the car on the dyno, seems many horses have escaped, will see tomorrow if a foible of the dyno or it’s down on power..

Fingers crossed it's a foible, or a doh! easy fix.
