My needs are far more in the area of a reliable and practical car that hopefully has space for handling and brakes so I don't get annoyed with it in the bends. One that doesn't crap its windows into the door would be an added bonus.

Shopping and bad weather are the main uses for the car these days, bikes do everything else, a half decent Elise would be wasted on me as I'd inevitably take one of the bikes out on good days..

Same engine as mine but obvs in the older 1series. Last of the n/a straight sixes from BMW (ignoring the more problematic N53 that followed in the facelift versions). Keeps some practicality as well vs say a 3 coupe. Mine is a proper slushbox so not really suited to hooning tbh - it can take a while to wake up. Tends towards understeer as well whereas the 1series is more go-karty.

That said I think some thought the 1series was a bit skittish. Birds did an upgrade kit which supposedly sorted that. Supposed to be good with an lsd I gather. I thought about it when doing the suspension refresh on mine earlier this year but decided it wasn't worth it on this and I couldn't be arsed.

Yeah, bit of an investment, but I'm enjoying it when I get to drive it so plan to keep it for the medium term at least. The car's cost me quite a bit considering the few miles I've done in it (3k) since November.
- leaking tyre valve when I first bought it
- repaint where a fence panel fell on it and scuffed the paint
- bonnet not closing properly
- decat removal for MOT (£££ labour as a 4 hour job)
- new key after I lost one
- track day (ok, can't really claim this as a cost - needed new rear pads after though, and contributed to the need for new tyres)
- these tyres

Decent tyres on a performance car don’t require even one seconds thought. They are as essential as putting fuel in.

if they’re the best for your car, then again it doesn’t require a seconds thought. It’s not as though they’re 10x the price or anything.

A lot of this sounds like you’ve cost your car a fair bit!

Just noise tested the 996 at Castle Combe; 4500rpm came in at 100.8 dB.

Limit at CC is 100 but they said it’s fine. Bedford is usually 101 so should just about sneak in as well.
