I watched the Buzz Lightyear film on a plane back from the US last night.

Mindless but also enjoyable

Entergalacitc

Animated film about a young cartoon animator finding success and love in NYC with lots of cool music and beautifully stylish animation. It's actually a love story but don't let that fool you, it's brilliantly entertaining with a fab soundtrack, it's humourous and manages to stay on the right side of being zeitgesity. It also features lots of art/pop culture references including a cameo from Jerry Saltz.

Lou

Not too bad really. Lou is a grumpy old girl, living in the Pacific North West who’s neighbours kid is kidnapped. Happy coincidence really since Lou is a retired CIA field agent who heads off in pursuit.

Nice change to the normal hero movie.

The Lost City

Daft but lots of laughs. Very Romancing the Stone but very funny in parts.

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN

I enjoyed this because I like funny Irish people swearing at each other. I'm not sure what the message was though. Ultimately a sad film. Worth a look. 7 wee donkeys out of a possible 10 wee donkeys.

How did it compare to In Bruges? (One of my favourite films)

It's been a long time since I've watched In Bruges richbshorts, so I wouldn't like to say. Other than them being completely different films, natch.

The Banshees is getting extremely good reviews, can't wait to see it.

I watched Barbarian last night. Which definitely did not go in any of the 30 or so ways I thought it would based on the opening 20 minutes or so. Another very good, suspenseful horror movie.

Have spent 2x12h airborne in the last fortnight, so made use of the inflight entertainment.

Top Gun Maverick
Mildly entertaining at best. Loads of trite and tired bleh. Basically the old film in a new frock featuring "fifth gen fighters". Barely 3/10 cheeky glimpses of Tom's pearly whites.

Shawshank Redemption
Still an amazing film with a fantastic story and acting. 8/10 Rita Hayworth posters.

Elvis
Brilliantly told story about the man behind the man. No idea how much of it is true, but the Colonel was portrayed as a master manipulator with no regard for the life of his star. Tom Hanks was amazing. 7/10 residences at the International Hotel.

The Rise of Gru
Very enjoyable way to set his backstory. Full of the usual silliness and with extra minions. 6/10 villains.

Watched one other film, bit can't remember what it was, so clearly didn't leave much of an impression.

It's a very stupid movie that knew exactly what it was and delivered peerless entertainment.

I did like Scott Manely's recent YT vid on how survivable the Mach 10 ejection might have been along with some other fun stuff.

Rise of Gruwas just about ok, I have no memory of what happened at all. Pretty tired formula, which is a bit sad as the original 2 are still on high rotation in this house.

Do you want me to help you build a fortification on that hill? I'm sure the experience would have been better on a bigger screen with better sound, but I can't get past the tired old "only one man/option for the job" trope.

FWIW I saw it on IMAX and on a plane to Brazil, so I'm well positioned to note how terrible the later was as an experience compared to the former. Half the fun is the cinematography!

And also, to repeat what I said in my earlier review, IMO the film benefits hugely from being 30+ years after the first one, rather than it detracting from it. Sure, they shouldn't do a 'Top Gun 3', but considering it was a 'film with no known enemy' it was remarkable how it could entice its audience to get behind the hero(s) of the movie.

Maybe try it again at home?

New Hellraiser

I was cautiously optimistic about this as the director's other movies are good. It's decent but it felt like something was missing, maybe that grimy feel of the original.

The cenobite designs were great though and if I wanted to damn it with faint praise I'd say it's the best Hellraiser since the original :laugh:

I thought the same, it was ok but nothing special. I liked what they did with the different configurations of the box and while the plot and twists were very predictable I enjoyed it. Just felt like it was missing something, but couldn't quite put my finger on what. The new cenobites were very cool though.

Very sad ending to well loved franchise. OK the last one was a bit rubbish and I haven't seen any of the Rob Zombie ones but 1 and 2 and the 2018 one were good. It just sort of fizzled out.

I thought at one stage, they were going to go down the "His evil spirit has been transferred into a new, young "Shape" trope but thankfully, they didn't. We literally had the entire cinema to ourselves which should have told us something...

No more than 3 "why do american kitchen have so many Chef's knives?" out of 10

See How They Run... An insanely fun whodunnit movie. Definite recommend.

The best Halloween is 3, they shouldn't have chickened out and gone back to Michael Myers after it.

Yeah the way the box changed was cool. Like I say I think there's a sleaziness to the original which really makes the tone and I think that's what's missing from the new one.

This is on Netflix at the moment and is the story of some German lads who volunteer to fight in the first world war

There wasn't much of a story as such, more a series of "vignettes", and there have been better WW1 films IMO

OK it’s not a film, but we don’t have a more suitable thread : finally (after 2x Covid-related cancellations) got to see The Book Of Mormon tonight in Glasgow.

Within the first 30seconds you could tell it was a Stone/Parker effort.

Absolutely loved it. Despite hating musicals as a genre. Laughed a lot.
