I don't think this is true.

It's a bit hyperbolic but is sort of true. You definitely see plenty of very valuable plates on not very expensive cars round here.

Plate ‘1’ is on a 2002 Mazda 6 with failed MOT and consistently poor history.
‘3’ is on a 1996 Astra with failed MOT.
These 2 appear to be the only single digit plates.

‘A1’ is on an 2007 Cooper S with 1000 miles - weird!
‘B1’ is on a 2014 Smart Fortwo
‘C1’ is on a 2017 Range Rover - finally a more expensive car but a diesel.
I’m bored now.

1 WJ is on a Vauxhall Adam Rocks (I saw it a couple of hours ago). The only reason I can think why is that the local dealer is WJ King.

Can't find 1 or 3 on the DVLA reg checker. A1 seems to have an interesting history though.

On a red BMW 4x4, no idea if it was an X3 or X5 in bright red with the number plate ST04 TER. It made me laugh and my wife look at me questioningly.

I don't get it.

edit - ah - because it's Scotchish rather than an actual language. Carry on.
