Had a Chinook go over, sounded like a flying Deltic.

Osprey flew right over our house the other day. Never seen one outside of an air show. Sounded like nothing else.

Not something I think I've ever seen or heard irl. I think I saw one on flightradar a while back, maybe for the Queen's flypast.

If or when an Osprey flies over your house, you will know exactly what it is. Happened once to us (probably posted in this thread somewhere) and despite never having seen one in the flesh it was such an odd noise it really made you notice it. Not a stealth aircraft

We get planes and occasional copters overhead, but I was drawn to look out of the window by the sound. It was in full flight mode and very low - like 500m.

I wonder if they always fly quite low? Was in full flight mode over us too. I guess they only use the hover function rarely; do they have to use it for take-off and landing?

They appear to have a short-take-off option in addition to full VTOL (as can be seen in this terrible video). Not sure if this is an option for landing?

They often seem to be out in the evenings, usually flying up the east coast then around Yorkshire and/or the lakes areas.

Ah, still with the rotors facing mostly upwards - I did wonder if they'd hit the floor with the rotors in full flight mode

Saw 4 of them flying low level down the Hudson in August.. strange looking craft. Always remind me of sci-fi movies/games troop carriers and I wonder which came first!
