Your fleet running reports
Re: Your fleet running reports
Wife's Yeti passed the MOT with a couple of advisories. Looking at the workshop video the front lower arm bushes are starting to split. Looks like an easy and cheap enough job to swap out the arms myself from ECP or similar, but the garage wanted £623 for them to do it. Jog on.
Similarly rear bum-pstops need doing and the front brakes are starting to show their age. Think they'll last a few months yet though.
Between that lot and the dent-master specialist the Yeti is gonna cost a few £ over the next few months.

My funky gauge thingumajig arrived, I’ve fitted it, but I’m not convinced by the readings I’m getting. I’m wondering if it’s because the Compact isn’t a real E36; I already know the OBD implementation is half-assed, it’s not fully OBD2. I’ll do some more research tomorrow.

Re: Your fleet running reports
I was waiting to see how you got on, I’ve been watching them for a loooong time, but not known anyone who’s fitted one.
Full fat e36s aren’t proper obd2 either. Not in Europe anyway. I think the USA forced it in earlier than other places. They get check engine lights on their e36s too

Putting two and two together, is your outside temp sensor reading correctly? It was definitely running rich at Kemble and that may have caused it.Sundayjumper wrote: Sat Jun 17, 2023 9:38 pm My funky gauge thingumajig arrived, I’ve fitted it, but I’m not convinced by the readings I’m getting. Harry's windscreen wiper update has blown my mind and admired Mik's perseverance with his windae. Everyone else's commitment to writing their progress up makes YFRR still one of my fave threads on the internetz.

Re: Your fleet running reports
I am! Key thing is that delivery is much improved; boost used to be fairly sharp and then it would flatten off at 4.5k meaning there wasn't much point revving it out, but now its far more progessive upto the redline...makes it more enjoyable to push on. The extra torque makes all the difference too, especially in the midrange.speedingfine wrote: Sun Jun 18, 2023 7:47 am Harry's windscreen wiper update has blown my mind and admired Mik's perseverance with his windae. You should give it a drive, you might like it more than my old Lupo GTi

However, I've had to go back but they're unable to resolve an issue when the car is cold with the revs flaring, so I think it'll need an overnighter so they can see what's going on

And you still don't

I'm pretty stumped right now so I've emailed him to ask for advice. I've an uneasy feeling that it's for some reason not compatible with the Compact.

Nothing is reading anything. Except the accelerometer which is internal to the board. The voltage certainly isn't 14.85V with the engine off, my multitester says 12.49V.Jobbo wrote: Sat Jun 17, 2023 11:44 pm Putting two and two together, is your outside temp sensor reading correctly?
That noticeably ? It ties in with the MOT fail for emissions - that two places have blamed on the cat even though the second time around the cat was brand new. I suspect the lambda sensor. I have a new one ready to put on.Jobbo wrote: Sat Jun 17, 2023 11:44 pm It was definitely running rich at Kemble and that may have caused it.

1) K line is only available in the engine bay
2) Their config for the M44 has a typo in it
Lashed together, it’s now working. I just need to go tidy up the wiring.

Yes, when you started up or reversed back in we moved away for that reason

Re: Your fleet running reports
Oh, sorry
I have new lambda sensor & exhaust gaskets to go on, I think that might fix it.

Re: Your fleet running reports

Did you cut the dial to fit it or nick a revcounter overlay from a full fat one?
That was another of my concerns, that there wouldn’t physically be the space in the compact dials if for some reason bmw had altered the board layout underneath.

Re: Your fleet running reports
I had a spare full fat cluster in stock. I don't even remember why. But I don't imagine you're surprisedintegrale_evo wrote: Sun Jun 18, 2023 5:04 pm Did you cut the dial to fit it or nick a revcounter overlay from a full fat one?

The online instructions said to solder the wires directly to the cluster circuit board but that looked a bit tricky and/or dangerous so I fed them out the back of the cluster and connected them onto the car side of the loom, with it's own plug so I can still take the cluster out.
There's two K-lines on these cars. The one for the DME isn't connected to the one that goes to the cluster but this is easily fixed by bridging pins 17 & 20 on the diagnostic plug under the bonnet. This should mean that the OBD socket in the footwell can read the DME now but I've not tried it. It hopefully makes the cluster under the bonnet redundant.
And finally, there's something wrong with the config file on the website, I've not figured exactly what but after deleting some stuff from it that I knew I didn't want, it started working

If someone had posted all of that before, it would have saved me about a day of faffing about.

Re: Your fleet running reports
Oh, and you need a button to interact with it. For now I'm just touching bare cables together but I've ordered a stalk with BC button for a tenner from ebay to keep it looking OEM.

Hmm, I already have an obc, could probably use another traction control button in the spare space with the text scrubbed off for a neat install.
Will have a play with my spare set of clocks

Re: Your fleet running reports
So - impressions of the first few days with the GTS... a pretty incredible step up from the 997 as I'd mentioned form my brief test drives. Hard to believe how much they'd moved the game on in one model generation, though I guess the 997 really was 996 underpinnings so its more of a 1998 v 2013 comparison in many respects (other than the 9A1 motor which is a carry over).
The induction noise via the Sound Symposer tube from the airbox is really quite incredible. I took my dad out in it on Saturday and he agreed its really not all that far from the FF (possibly louder but less mellifluous) which is remarkable given half the number of cylinders. Clearly Porsche had spent a lot of time fiddling with this (see this article https://www.porsche.com/usa/aboutporsch ... article06/)
I've now done about 350 miles in two days in it. Had a 6am start on Saturday to do a run down to birling gap then across to Goodwood/Lavant and back via the Hindhead tunnel to London. Honestly - 50-70mph in second through the tunnel really felt like the world was ending - also shows the silly long gearing!

That said - no car is without its niggles:
*The BOSE sound system is inexplicably crap. I don't know how they've managed to do it but it sounds even worse than the system in the 997. Also no Apple Carplay so I'm using a phone mount for satnav like it's the year 2010
*EPAS rather than hydraulic steering is also poor around the straight ahead versus the hydraulic equivalent. It doesn't spoil the overall experience too much and does feel in keeping with the more mature drive of the car.
*Fuel economy is noticeably worse than the 997 - obviously I've not been driving miss daisy and the temptation to sit at 70 in 4th on the motorway to hear it howling along is incompatible with economical driving but... in 350miles it's averaged 20mpg. Then again it has a specific output of 113hp per litre (within a gnat's whisker of a 430 Scuderia) so go figure.
*The PDK inexplicably has a kickdown even in manual with sport plus - I mean what?? I may want to give it full throttle without dropping a gear. It would be tempting to have the button beneath the throttle taken out as I can't imagine any situation when I'd want it.
It also seems to attract a LOT of attention compared to the 997 which in some ways is puzzling. I had a young kid tail me the whole way back up the A3 in his Polo GTI which was amusing - interestingly it is generally people wanting to sit behind you rather than lairy street racing behaviour which is good!

Re: Your fleet running reports
Sounds great! You definitely picked the right car for you!!!
Re: Your fleet running reports
Great arse.
Different car and gen but the Bose in my 987 was crap too.
Re: Your fleet running reports
Nice @GG. (although I think you should copy and paste this into your purchase thread, as it will get lost in here pretty quickly).
Sounds like it's a big "hit" straight away, and good that it feels so different to your 997. At first I was a bit dissapointed with your comments re Sound Symposer, as I immediately assumed some speaker-driven fakery, but now I read the article you linked to (cheers) I don't see any issue with that at all.
edit: out of interest - the aesthetic doesn't bother me at all personally, but does it benefit from the rear wiper? VXR8 used to drive me nuts in the wet, as rear visibility became awful, but the Evora doesn't hold any water on the rear screen at all (particularly after application of the G-Techniq glass treatment).
