I was loaned an i4 40 M-Sport for 2 days which was nice. BMW have also delivered one today for me to run for the next two weeks. Portimao blue with oyster leather. It's a very nice car so let's see what it's like to do some mileage in.

The one from Mon/Tues was great. Plenty fast and great at A & B road overtaking. Charged at 162kw on one charger which filled it pretty quick while I did some emails. 69p per kWh though 🤯

It's a lovely thing to hack around in. The new curved display is lovely, but they missed a trick by dropping the old short cut buttons. I like them!

Let's see what they next two weeks brings.
I wish the 330e Touring was a bit bigger, I'd have had one instead of the Kuga if it had been.

Massive waiting times for them though!

Are you charging at home as well?

I don't think you'll get the best EV experience just using fast chargers on the go!

There an apparently reputable Porsche specialist not a huge distance away, so I'm having the car trailered over there, having the work done, and saving a wedge of cash as well

The car's going to be gone for a while yet though (the specialist won't get it until this Friday)
Covered by warranty I hope?
Technically not covered by the 3 month warranty I got from Ashgood

However, a friend of mine pointed out that under Consumer Rights Act there may be something if the problem existed when I bought the car (or something) - I've not had chance to look into this too much yet

Obvs the issue is, how do you prove either way if the problem existed 4 months ago when I bought it?

Mid Sussex Porsche wanted £1500 to replace the gear linkage btw

It's being trailered to a Porsche specialist (from MSP) tomorrow (Friday) morning - they're going to provide some more information about exactly what's failed and how - it may be there's evidence of long term wear for example, which might be a bargaining chip to ask Ashgood's to contribute to the cost of repair

Isn't the onus on the seller to prove the issue wasn't there if it occurs within 6 months of purchase?

Who knew, wiper arms can be adjusted and manufacturers even have special tools to hook over the arms and do it without marking them??

The x5 has always had an annoying judder for the bottom few inches of the downstroke on the passenger side. New blades, making sure the glass was spotless, trying different coatings etc, nothing seemed to help.

Watched a YouTube vid, and it all became obvious. The best sweep wants the blade to lean slightly into the direction of travel, not too much or the water will try and wedge under it and lift the blade. If the blade is pointing into the sweep the rubber grips, wedges under and the blade skips, lands, does the same thing again, a bit like axel tramp on a car at hard launch.

There’s no adjuster but on an X5, so a pair of adjustable spanners were used to put a slight twist in the arm so the blade sits closer to upright.

Extensive screenwash test session shows it now sweeps cleanly and quietly in both directions 😎

I will charge at home but I spend a lot of time on the road and nights away.

Sadly, the demo has been a little difficult. It had charging issues yesterday with the 7kw chargers at work but BMW dialled into the car remotely and fixed it. I drove back into the office from my hotel this morning and tried to top it up but the charge flap is now locked shut and will not open so I'm currently sat in the dealership trying to get it fixed. 😂

According to this:

https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights ... nMC5b0ZzJb
I've owned the car for less than six months

If you take the vehicle back within six months of purchase, the dealer should accept there was a problem when the vehicle was sold.

If the dealer doesn't accept there was a problem when the vehicle was sold, they'll have to prove this.

Just speak to the selling dealer and explained what has happened. You'd expect a reputable dealer to help in some way after 4 months.

The onus is on the dealer to prove the fault wasn’t there if it becomes apparent within 6 months of purchase. I don’t think there’s any realistic chance the dealer wouldn’t be held responsible if you went to court over it. You hold the cards, but engage with the dealer first to be safe.

The mx5 has developed a knock/rattle from the rear N/S that I can only describe as like a very small cowbell

From some very quick research it seems that the rear hub bushes can wear prematurely and the cure from Mazda is a complete hub assembly at £800 per side . I've still got almost a year of Mazda warranty left so they can look at it after the summer.

Exciting ev update time 🎉

The loaner had to stay with BMW as they couldn't open the charge flap. Thankfully they gave me the i4 that I'd used on Mon/Tues which was great.......

...apart from being on 10% charge. I had enough to get me to Skelton lake services where there are 6 ionity "rapid" chargers. When I arrived only 5 were working and those 5 were full. Thankfully I only had to wait 5 mins as a Skoda driver was waiting to get from 99-100% 🙄

Anyhow, I then plugged into the rapid charger only to find that it wasn't so rapid due to my new charger friends. Sat for an hour charging at approx 60kw to get to 80% then uncoupled and frigged off home.

Today’s fleet update - got this to drive round Martha’s Vineyard:

It’s the 3.6 V6, makes a sound like an angry elephant if you clog it and has some surprisingly high quality leather on the inside.

Must admit I wondered what mito was on about the other day, having to use an imperial socket on his mito.

Well, today I did an oil change on mine. Strangely the hex on top of the oil filter cap didn’t fit any of my sockets which all go 24-27-30.

27 too tight, 30 too loose. I can’t remember having this problem before, maybe I used a 30 and got away with it because it’s not done up very tights.

Anyway, turns out an old 1 1/16th imperial socket was a nice fit. I’d guess it’s actually a 28mm but who knows?!

I bought a 20l tub of petronas 5w 40 a few weeks ago which was enough to change the merc, compact and mito with some left over for top ups.

I've been using 20l tubs of Mannol recently. They're often available on ebay with a 10% coupon which makes them a great deal.

Father’s Day is coming up and they say if you make a long lasting present which is hand made it’s even better so I settled on tinnitus and some simple fabrication.

My dad originally fell in love with the 620R after seeing one being driven by a lunatic at Goodwood - this exact one:

With the car originally due to be delivered in December I rung up the parts department and asked for the exact exhaust the Goodwood car was running thinking it would be a good Christmas present. It’s made to order and they took their sweet time with all the parts shortages until I got an email last week that it’s been shipped.

Image
You’ll notice it’s about 2 inches shorter than the original silencer - the factory solution to this is to buy a longer 4 in 1 collector. However I’d read online that changing the collector isn’t something you’d want to be doing regularly, it’s a real faff to put it mildly.
I thought I’d just make a longer bracket, because it might be so loud that it gets annoying after a single drive and doing it my way means swapping exhausts only takes 10 minutes.

So old one off and new one on
Image

I made a template and found an old 4mm thick aluminium RC car chassis to cut it out of
Image
Image

And fitted it
Image
I’ve ordered some nicer torx cap screws to finish it off but so far it works and hasn’t fallen off yet.

Strangely it’s barely louder from inside the car until you go past a wall and the reverb is crazy. The car seems to run much better at low speeds with it as well as idles better and hasn’t stalled yet. And hopefully having the exhaust 2 inches further away from the bottom corner of the wheel arch will prevent the clear coat from being burnt off as the exhaust is now a flamethrower. 20kg weight saving too according to the weirdos who measure everything with a scale
How about not having a sig at all?

So the Evora clearly wasn't impressed that I'd test-driven an Emira. Later on the same day I closed the door as I exited the car and heard a weird crunch. I didn't immediately associate it with the frameless windows doing that 10mm window-seat after you close the door. It did it again when I got back into the car. I opened the window - all seemed good - drove home with it down, and then tried to raise the window again. Non. Gave it some assistance, and it rose, but the associated crunching noised suggested that something was jamming the mech.

Pulled off the door card and liberally sprayed lithium grease around. This didn't make any difference, other than covering the window glass in lithium grease. You dick.

Squeezing a hand inside, it was clear something had broken or come adrift, as the cable sleeve was getting dragged into the winding mechanism during the lift phase. Fine going the other way. Bah.

So the mech had to come out, where it became clear that a stoopid plastic clip that holds the cable sleeve to the base plate had failed. Quickly checked the parts site, and you can't buy that component. Of course. You have to buy the entire window mechanism. Which lists at £450 + VAT (ie £538 + postage). Ah. For a 10p clip failure....

Dark great section to the right with coil spring should look like the one to the left.

Image

So rather than wedge a couple of bits of wood in to hold the window closed, I thought it was worth the effort of a bodge. Cut a slot in a big washer and fed it onto the front of the cable sleeve. Drilled a couple of holes in the base plate, so I could fit a chunky cable tie through to hold the cable sleeve in place. Then fit a smaller cable tie to try and ensure it stays in place. And a third to ensure the smaller cable tie holding the main cable tie in place stays in place.

Image

Image

Image

Aaaand - it worked. :D Kinda. :? I wasn't able to tension the system properly, so it was grumbling a bit, and just wasn't right.

Spoke to B.I.L. who confirmed that he could 3D print me a part. We could thicken some of the wall sections to make it more robust. Just need to get dimensions. Which would have been easy, were it not bodged up and back in the car.

I also asked on the Loltus forum about any Evora breaking. None known, but recommendations to call ES Motorsports - who created some of the Evora GT4 cars, and therefore had a lot of spares kicking about.
Image.

So after a couple of days wait whilst they dug around in some parts bins..... "we've got one, BUT.... someone else has had the motor off it, so I assume that's no use". Au contaire - my motor is fine - I can swap it over. We agreed on £60 for the remaining assembly, including VAT and delivery. That's a bit better. :)

Swapped the motor and fitted it today. Re fitted door card. Realised I'd left a bit of wood inside (temporary protection against the glass dropping unexpectedly whilst I had the mech out). Took door card off again. Re-fitted door card.

Working again. Hoorah. 8-)
