And before anyone says stupid stuff like “continent crushing”, what do you think the fuel consumption is like at 170+ ? It barely touches 20mpg even when keeping it under 70mph. You’d probably be stopping to fill up every half an hour

Crushingly tedious, more like.

I always took “continent crushing” to be as much about comfort and lack of fatigue as mph.

Re. mpg, I've seen a T4 Caravelle VR6 for sale - 140bhp automatic - and the average mpg is around the same as your Bentley

Front n/s inner CV boot done. It really wasn't too bad a job once I'd figured out how to get the driveshaft out. I need to do the other side so I'll time myself on that one. Barring unexpected issues I reckon an hour would cover it.

RATE MY BODGE

The Cayenne failed its MOT a couple of weeks ago for a worn propshaft centre bearing. I had a new propshaft in stock (because of course I did) so I wanged that on and it passed, but the next time I drove it there was a noise / vibration that wasn't there before that felt exactly like a knackered propshaft. I didn't want to buy another new propshaft if that wasn't the problem.

Now, the failed bearing on the old prop wasn't actually the bearing, but the rubber surround between the bearing and the support bracket. The bearing part was fine.


I figured if I could clean it up & pack out the gap I could at least test if the vibration goes away - which would confirm the new propshaft was at fault.

Ta-da !


Some chopped up bits of air hose & zip ties. The bearing is just a support, there's no axial load, so for the purpose of testing it's fine. And it worked. Vibration gone. I'm probably better off fitting a new bearing, it's apparently not an easy job splitting the prop and removing the old bearing, but it'll mean the rest of the prop lives on. There's nothing else wrong with it.

You're probably already aware, Darkside Developments may do an easy fit rubber kit (mrs).

That was on a YouTube short a few weeks ago.

As part of testing it has worked like a charm.

But for £400 it doesn't seem like VFM when I can get a bearing kit for £70. A couple of hours of my time is well worth the £300+ saved.

I wasn't aware those oe type kits were available - , especially when you've already got the prop out.

12th August given as ETA on my Kuga, which seems a long, long time away.

Have been given a A3 Sportback which seems like a decent little thing to run about in until then, a lot smaller car than I'm used to.

Need to buy a parking sensor for the XF, a decent rear seat cover, and sort out what I need to do insurance and V5 wise.

Do I need to swap the car into her name as well as the insurance? Will it make any difference cost wise as I'd rather keep it as a 1 owner car.

Galaxy has started using more coolant than I'm happy with. Topped it up to the max line middle of last week, and on checking this morning it was about half a centimetre from the minimum line, having driven about 250 miles since.

All is bone dry with no leaks or stains to suggest it is leaking. Which leads to uncomfortable reading about a design flaw in the Ecoboost engine. Apparently TADTS and the fix is a new block/engine. It wasn't properly fixed until 2019 or 2020.

It isn't misfiring or feeling down on power, but that's not a guarantee that it isn't burning coolant (looks like it is usually cylinder two or three). Will look at pulling codes, but otherwise it requires a borescope to see if there's evidence of coolant in the cylinders. The alternative, in the absence of an obvious culprit, is to load the parts canon with all the hoses and whatnot for the cooling system. However, that seems an easy way to spend a lot of money with little guarantee of success.

It has had the recall to fix the cooling issue which included replacing the cracked head, so another avenue to explore is whether the head gasket has failed, although there was no sign of mayonnaise on the cap or dip stick last time I checked, and it isn't smoking.

Investigations loom.

A blown head gasket doesn't always have to result in mayonnaise, if it's just a small breach from a waterway to the cylinder. Wouldn't necessarily smoke either if it was slow coolant loss.

I wouldn't write off the engine yet Alex. Get a competent garage to do a proper pressure test on all 4 cylinder and see what they find.

No, don’t change the keeper on the V5. Makes no difference between husband and wife.
