Meh, I fitted a 6 foot freezer in an Audi a3...

The RR is a Lovely car to have - and as daft as it sounds, great for driving round the city. Though stop start traffic is AWFUL for mpg.

My personal rule of thumb, on the kind of shitheaps I can afford, is £1k per year. I'd feel physically sick at £12k/year.

Yes I think that is a reasonable requirement to set. Though don’t you have 10 cars all doing that :lol:

I’m itching to get another performance car but it would absolutely have to be depreciation free - there is no way I’d have two cars doing that. Particularly given anything else would have finance on it.

Tyres and consumables, plus a wheel bearing and 4 new air springs come to £7000 in 8 years and 80,000 miles. Not including tax and fuel.

It’s going nowhere soon.

The sensible answer is probably that although my fleet has gradually grown, it's also moved more towards older/lower depreciation cars. They inevitably need more repairs than your RR (which tbh I'm very impressed it hasn't given you random 4-figure repair bills on top of the depreciation) but I can mainly do those myself and can hunt out the best deals on parts etc. The newest car we have is my wife's MINI and that's a 2011; over ten years old now. Even the Vantage has fared surprisingly well, same segment as your 997 and I'll admit it was more luck than judgement here, but bought with low miles for £35k in 2007, it's still only on 29k miles and looking at Autotrader right now the cheapest Vantage under 30k miles is £33k. Knock off a bit for haggling or whatever and my £1k/year is pretty close. It's given me no surprising bills in that time. I'm pretty sure my 996 has actually gone up since I bought it (£13.5k in 2011). But others have been worse, obvs ! My E39 was a nightmare. We had a Mazda 6 that was a terrible decision - nothing went wrong but we bought high & sold low in quite a short period of time so the £/year was horrible. My latest MINI was cheap to buy, I've put money into it but I'm still only in for about £2k total and it should be worth more than that now. Hopefully I'll get a cheap couple of years out of that. I don't put a £ value on my time though. That would be a killer.

I would suggest that it is a fool's errand, wanting to buy a depreciation-free performance car. If you want it, buy it, and just be prepared for some bills. If they don't happen then it's a win.

If you keep cars for 8 years you’d hope the depreciation will be pretty sensible. I can never do that of course so my personal depreciation limit (which has been broken) was always ~£3k/yr if kept for 2 years. Since I do so many miles now I upped that to £5k/yr on the basis that I need something which is not going to require regular attention.

Boring though 😄

When you buy the GLE63 you can make that 10k a year and offset the smiles against it 😎

GLC63 was what I was thinking of, but having read the reviews the ride is way too hard despite air suspension so I think it'll be a no. Was thinking of a non-S without sports exhaust since I wouldn't want it to be too obvious anyway :lol:

For context, not having to pay £5k/yr for a train season ticket balances the depreciation now. My fuel costs are more than that in any case (44mpg, 30k miles, £1.70/litre is £5270) so perhaps I'll stick with a diesel for the moment.

Honestly, when you're as old & confused as I am, 2007 and 2017 feel recent & interchangeable. FML.

Which reminds me, this week I discovered the concept of The Meldrew Point, it is when you are the same age Richard Wilson was on the day One Foot In The Grave first aired. It's 19,537 days; about 53½ years.

I expect an F pace SVR would have a much better ride if you want that type of car, and the facelift interiors are a nicer place to be than the GLC.

Yeah, but - JLR innit. Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. I'd take a punt on a £10k Jag but not something for ~£40-50k.
