Most desirable BMW for me right now.

Well I've read 4 or 5 Supra reviews and they all say it's really good, despite/because of having borrowed BMW bits underneath and for the interior and despite there being a presumed faster version waiting in the wings. Compared well to Cayman and Alpine A110.

Why not just have a BMW though - it is fundamentally the same and not a badge engineered copy of another car. Buying the Supra would just annoy me knowing that beneath the body panels its not a real Toyota (and even more that it is underpowered for a 'real' Supra and not even a 2+2).

Imagine if Porsche decided that it was a bit expensive making those bespoke platformed 911s and just based it off a TT instead (even then it would have the right number of seats!)

I think cars like the new Conti GT which is based on the Panamera are acceptable in part because they look very little like the sister car that shares its platform and they are also within a single group of manufacturers, not totally separate entities.

Isn't that a convertible? Where the Supra isn't? Reviews don't seem to be comparing it drive-wise to a Z4.

That's probably the best argument for it to be honest. If you really didn't want a convertible and don't want to wait for the Z4 coupe which I presume they will produce.

It has that in common with the Supra too?! Jeez.

Supra has the usual Toyota 5 year warranty doesn’t it? I reckon the interior and exterior look better. It will have better aftermarket support. Brembo brakes will be nicer too.

The TT is rear engined these days is it? :?

It is if you fit the chassis backwards 🤷‍♂️

Well if you use the Toyota logic the most important part of the car is the engine. Doesn’t matter where it’s sourced from, what chassis or where it’s placed, as long as it maintains the same engine configuration as the previous model it is sufficient.

Which was precisely my point. Basing something on underpinnings not equivalent to the original on the basis that it is cheaper and "close enough". Exactly what VW actually did with the beetle in just dumping a Beetle-ish looking body on a Golf.

Even then I don't see that kind of change as being as much of a sell out as this (well, maybe putting a 911 body on a TT/Golf would be) as fundamentally German and Japanese cars have such different characters and re-badging a BMW as a Toyota is not faithful to their design ethos or fundamental characteristics in any way, save for the "input" that they insist they had on the original car's design, which clearly, was not all that much.

From what I can make out, exactly half of the internets are jolly cross about the new Supra, and the other half are jolly cross about those jolly-cross'ers. What fun :D

How do you feel about the new NSX?

I was disappointed at first about it being designed by the American studio and built in the US, but I really like the end product so where it was designed and built became insignificant.

All the whinging about it not being a Supra coz it's not 2+2, they should've called it a 2000GT!

They lost they way with the NSX for reasons other than where it was designed/produced I think.

I never got too excited over it as the hybridisation / V6 turbo / autobox seemed like too big a shift from the original concept (which I think of as being an entry level ferrari competitor - at that point still the 458 I think - but at 2/3 or 1/2 the cost). Add to that the hefty 1800kg weight and styling that didn't really move me.

The old one was hardly a looker. This one looks great to me.
