New iPhones
Re: New iPhones
iPhone 3G was £99 on a £30/month contract with O2.
I think it was the first time I'd ever paid anything upfront, was used to hopping between 12 month contracts for about £15 a month with a reasonable handset free.

Re: New iPhones
Just updated the family's spare phone which is an SE to iOS 12 and it really does zip along. I still think that design from the iPhone 4 is one of the most iconic and best phone designs I've ever seen. And even though its comically small now, I think it has a perfect size, weight and feel to it.
Cheers,

Re: New iPhones
One day I'm going to plot a graph that depicts the desirable phone size at any given point in time
"Hey check out our new phone, it's SMALLER / BIGGER (delete as appropriate) than the last one! Haven't you always wanted a SMALLER / BIGGER (delete as appropriate) phone?!"
Nokia 8210 anyone?

Re: New iPhones

I loved the Motorola V50 and still have one in a drawer with a blue 8210. Nokia did some nice premium versions in matt black and metal, I think one had a slider cover over it too.
I get why people want bigger phones now as they've become so powerful and the screens are great for watching stuff on the move, but I honestly still think there's a market for iPhone to do a new SE which is now RIP.
Cheers,

Re: New iPhones
Who actually uses a phone as a phone anymore anyway? I very rarely make or receive any calls.
You settle up, I'll go get the Jag.
Re: New iPhones
Having recently gone through the PAC code dance (switching Voda-Giffgaff-Voda because the best deal was for new customers on Voda and I was already with them) there's a lot to be said for this. Make SIMs data-only, no allocated phone number and you can use your number as your ID for Whatsapp calls or whatever - a non-proprietary phone app would be the ideal for anyone who does still speak to people.tim wrote: Thu Sep 20, 2018 9:32 am Who actually uses a phone as a phone anymore anyway? Re: New iPhones
I'd quite happily remove the call app from my phone, hate phonecalls in general and especially when people call me.tim wrote: Thu Sep 20, 2018 9:32 am Who actually uses a phone as a phone anymore anyway? I very rarely make or receive any calls.
"Hi I'm just making sure you got my email"
"why the fuck wouldn't I have got it, stop annoying me"

Re: New iPhones
Isn't that the opposite? Who cares about more than one SIM when you don't use it for voice calls?

If you don't use it as a phone, why spend £1500 on a huge iPhone; Isn't an iPad better at not being a phone?
Re: New iPhones
Apart from being too big to pocket, my Galaxy Tab 8.4" was pretty much perfect, including being used as a phone.
Re: New iPhones
Exactly that, they're too big to carry around. iPhone Xs Max is a good size for doing stuff on, yet can still go in a jacket pocket.
People wailing - you're spending £1500 on a phone - well it's not really a telephone you're buying, is it.

Tim, sometimes people can be a little disingenuous with the actual facts in order for their statement to have more impact.

Re: New iPhones
I don't care who spends what on what, I couldn't give less of a shit. I was thinking out loud about the use case for someone who doesn't make or receive calls and at what point an iPad is the better device to carry about. I guess it's what they were doing with iPad mini. Do they still make thjose, is there an up-to-date version or have these plus sized iPhones made them obsolete?
Re: New iPhones
iPad Mini is still way too big to carry around. I have an old Min 2 at home which the kids play with.
What you're describing is an iPhone +/Max sized iPod Touch, that would be bob-on, if you never made calls or used SMS.

Re: New iPhones
The reason I've never bothered to get a tablet is that I can't think of anything I would use it for that I can't do on my phone.

Re: New iPhones
Tablets are great for watching telly/videos on in bed. Though if you fall asleep, they are more likely to twat you in the face than a phone.
Re: New iPhones
Travel. Perfect device to have on you with a few films etc loaded on, internet access, all that stuff. There is a definite use for them.ZedLeg wrote: Thu Sep 20, 2018 11:29 am The reason I've never bothered to get a tablet is that I can't think of anything I would use it for that I can't do on my phone.
Re: New iPhones
Aye, I get why other people use them, just don't have a space for them myself. The times people tend to use them is when I'm reading, I struggle to read at home/during the day as there's usually too much distracting stuff happening
