10% up, which is nice.
If it gets back the 40% I’ll sell and go into something else.

Absolutely sod all to do with crypto, but I just became aware of GoPro share price history, so thought I'd mention it here.
Peaks of nearly $87 soon after they floated in 2014 and everyone wanted one of their products > the share price hasn't got close to $2 so far this year....
Clicky.
Must have been
painful for some investors.....

As a counter to that. look at Rheinmetal over the last five years.
I suspected it'd go up, but I didn't have any money back then. Ten fold increase in value, and that's not even from before the conflict - that's from March when it had just kicked off and prices had already gone up a bit.
Fuckin' ooof, sling a few grand in that early and you could have had a deposit for a mortgage (or in the north, half a house) with that....

Yes, it’s called investing
It’s a risk, it’s fun but you need to sacrifice something to be able to do it.

Yep, it’s also exponentially harder the less money you have.

Yep but giving up before starting is a loser way to look at it.
If you invest for 10 years in the S&P 500 then you can’t lose, small term gains are what’s very hard as you aren’t letting compounding and time take over.

So much that.
Slight aside, but I still have a crystal clear memory of being at a party when I was around 22. The older cousin of my now-wife was going out with a guy who was from a wealthy family (and to be fair, he absolutely recognised his privilege) - a couple of his mates were there too and I got talking to one who was maybe 25? Part way into the conversation he casually asked how my portfolio was looking? After a 5 second pause (that felt like 15 minutes) I'm not sure which of us was most embarrassed - me for not having a fucking clue what he was on about, or him having to explain to me what he meant. <shudder>

Oh there is a definite difference in what some people have as day to day money and others.
Also, some people on relatively modest salaries make a lot from shares. I don’t know about the UK but one of the biggest groups of millionaires is teachers as they understand maths well.
It’s when people look at £2.50p a day as not worth it then they don’t understand and it’s very much worthwhile.

The basic principles of investing that would apply to 99% of people are a piece of piss if explained properly. But it’s not taught in schools and probably never will be.

Definitely this!!!
All kids should be sat down and be told about compound interest and time.
Very small amounts 20 years ago would have me retiring 10 years earlier!

Similar story to Beyond Meat, who were promising to revolutionise food and had an IPO in 2019, starting at $60 a share and then trebling to over $200 in the following months. However they are now $2 and rumours abound of their imminent failure as a business.

As I've recently sold all my shares I now pin all my "millionaire next year Rodney" hopes on premium bonds. They've been pretty disappointing recently and I have seriously been contemplating cashing most of them in, so it was nice to have a £700 return this month. I need to work out my yearly earnings but even with that I doubt it will be much better than an average savings account. There's always the chance of the million prize though...

My boy is very lucky on PB, he had 8 wins last year totalling £875 (from around £8k invested - thanks grandad!).

That is a very good return.
And considerably better than you'd "expect" with PBs.
Have him take over the full house accounts immediately

I remember starting my investment journey early in 2008. I was under 18 so had to ask my dad to open a spread betting account which I deposited £250 in. Economics was one of the A level subjects I was taking so of course I knew everything there was to know about the markets.
The market had just pulled back in 2007 so it would surely only go up in 2008 and I’d make a killing buying discounted names. Went about as well as you can imagine.
The power of compounding is scary, when you take into account the implications of the value of a single £ when you’re young.
However after my extended hospital adventures I became more of a risk taker

I have won precisely zero on Premium Bonds held since the 1970s. Only £25 of them but I can't sell them now can I

Agreed. Selfishly I’m a bit glad they aren’t though. If everyone was au fait with this kind of thing then after a couple of generations everyone would be millionaires and that’d upset the economy
On premium bonds, the advertised ‘annual prize rate’ is 3.6% but median returns are quite a bit lower than that. Even a cash ISA is a better option.

Openly documented my 50k 1 year investment in Premium Bonds. Made 350 quid.
