The Compact is going to BMW for a recall tomorrow, as the airbag might fire shrapnel at you if it goes off!

It still surprises me that manufacturers have to spend cash on something that they built nearly 21 years ago.
They tried to sell me an oil change for £295, which I declined as it more than 10% of the vehicles value, but went for the a/c recharge and refresh at £29.99.

I wonder what the complementary health check will recommend?
I’ve been using it 4 days a week since late January for my new job and have definitely gone off selling it for now. Might even treat it to some new tyres, which have loads of life left but at 11 years old have a bit of cracking.

Either the Series 3 or Defender need to go to free up some cash and I’m torn as to which it should be.
I’ve only done 10 miles in the Series since the rebuild and would like to spend some time getting to know it, but it’s better to sell as a fresh rebuild.
In the crazy world of Land Rover, both are worth about £5k-8k more than my total costs for them and I’ve had one for six years and the other eleven.

Been thinking about the fully compressed shock that had the broken spring on. Given I drove on it before realising could it be that the shock has been fully compressed and hence why it won't return?

If so would that have fucked anything internally?

Shocks normally spring out all on their own. If it’s not doing that it may well be borked.

Can you pull it out by hand? They sometimes lose their springiness with age, but generally I’d say they’re fine as long as they move smoothly through their full travel and have no leaks.

Had to replace a rear one on the stepdaughters polo as there was noticeable free play going from extension to compression before you could feel any damping effect, even though it was fine on the car when doing a bounce test and no leaks.

Unless you’ve somehow bent the damper rod I doubt they’ve been damaged just by compressing them.

I thought gas shocks spring (slowly) out, whereas oil filled don’t

You can't pull it out at all. We eventually managed to get just enough thread, with spring on maximum compression, to get the upper spring plate on and the nut. My thinking was to then wind off the compressors to pull the rod out. But having done that and then compressed the spring again it just pulls back down.

We even put the top plate on and nut without spring, turned it upside down, stood on the plate and pulled the damper body but it wouldn't budge at all. It's like it's locked fully compressed. Like trying to pull against a vacuum.

The odd coloured centres need sorting, but other than that, the wheels suit it.

I still don't get it, is this their insurance company or the actual people who reversed into your bumper?

I think I've already said it's the insurance company.

The last time someone backed into my car was the m coupe. Needed a new bonnet. I got to choose who fixed it too. We will see.

Had a fun hour at Jon Seal Sportscars. Ended up putting a deposit down on the blue one. Also got to poke around the GT3RS, that is a car to die for.

'06 111R with a few mods. Lost my appetite for riding motorbikes so thought this was the next best thing.
