Apparently this is a VW spin off EV brand
https://www.scoutmotors.com/
Can't find much about it, but it may be a reskinned Rivian following that recent partnership?

They look really good. Wonder why it would take until 2027 to launch if they are just reskinned Rivians? I thought they SUV looked quite Ford Bronco-ish and I know VW and Ford are doing some platform sharing, so wondered if that may be involved?

Just my assumption, may be totally unrelated or only go as far as sharing a battery pack and motors. The 'Our Story' section of the website shows that they're constructing a new factory for it.

Had the letter from DVLA today to tell me the VED on the i3 is increasing in April, from £0 to whatever the current £190 band is at that point - presumably £200+. They don’t actually specify the figure.
So VED is absolutely nothing to do with emissions or encouraging efficiency any more. The i3 will have the same VED as a Range Rover of the same age. But will they reduce my other cars down to £190 to match ? Will they fcuk

Fag packet maths from here:
https://www.statista.com/statistics/141 ... cle-sales/
Roughly 1.5m EVs sold since 2017. Going from £0 to (say) £200. That’s £300m pa windfall, collected from people who bought an EV in good faith expecting free VED.

Yeah they’re in the shit because they’re losing out on VED and fuel duty. Congestion charging will also apply to EVs in London from next year I think.
You’re better off sticking with your old dinosaur powered car

Round Gavster’s way, residents parking permits always used to be based on emissions too. That’ll be out the window I expect.
Once they figure out how to tax domestic electricity used for charging, there won’t be much economic point in buying an EV.
I wonder how much they’d need to increase fuel duty by to raise £300m pa ? Probably not much. Doing that and leaving EV VED at zero would be better at steering people towards low emissions.

FY23-24, 29.107bn litres of diesel & 17.281bn litres of petrol.
0.65p per litre would raise your £300m.

Come on guys, you _knew_ zero RFL was just a temporary incentive right? You didn't really believe EVs would never pay RFL did you? What happens when all the cars are electric - all lost revenue. There was no way they wouldn't be bringing it back once EVs started gaining traction.

Yep, starting on Christmas Day. Merry Christmas
“From 25 December 2025, the cleaner vehicle discount will be discontinued. From this date, all vehicle owners, unless in receipt of another discount or exemption, will need to pay to enter the Congestion Charge zone during charging hours.”

Government don’t need to steer people towards EVs because of how the push to EV is mandated.
They’re better off with people not buying EVs as they can fine the manufacturers astronomical amounts for not hitting targets.
And I’ll be very surprised if the fuel duty doesn’t go up many pence this budget. So they’ll have their cake and eat it for at least the next few years.

I don’t entirely disagree but the way they’ve done it is terrible. An extra penny on fuel duty hardly anyone would notice and it’s dead easy to justify on environmental grounds. Then taper in VED on EVs. Maybe just on new cars going forwards, or put them into one of the old low emission ICE bands - those are still in place for pre-2017 cars - make it a nominal amount.
Going from zero to £200 overnight *and* backdating to 2017 so that it covers near enough every EV in the country is basically saying “you thought your car was zero VED ? LOL !! SUCKER !!!” to over a million people. It doesn’t seem very smart.

Have you seen what they did to retirement age; specifically to women of a certain age? They (the government, irrespective of colour) don’t care how it looks or how it’s seen.. my mum now has to wait for 5 years more than someone born a year earlier to get a state pension. The peons are irrelevant

I’m sure fuel duty is going to be absolutely hammered as well.
My initial horseshit comment was to the Tesla post btw, not the taxing evs thing.
The emissions based system was always a load of shite, road tax should always have been used to maintain and improve transport, you already pay an environmental charge by buying more fuel if you drive something which drinks and therefore pollutes more. A big engined guzzler doesn’t pollute while it’s parked so the whole tax thing based on a nominal fee is flawed.
I don’t know what the answer is. Maybe £100 for every 4 wheeled vehicle which uses the road, but then bump up fuel duty a bit?

Better this than road pricing, which is just another way for a government body to check on you.
Like I-Evo says above, a yearly standing charge and then 1 or 2p a litre on fuel purely for road fund/tax would be good. You pay for what you use on whatever vehicle you are currently using.
Dave!

The end of CC discount was set years ago, the original remit of CC included air quality improvement but ULEZ replaced that part. I drive into the CC zone several times a year but hard to argue that EVs aren’t part of congestion.
The VED change was inevitable but poorly done. Traditionally they don’t re-band existing cars so there’s loads of 01-17 diesels on the old CO2 rates paying £35 or less. Would have made much more sense to put all the EVs and hybrids in the 0-100g CO2 group and raised everything to start at £180 then increment from there.
