I doubt there’s any glovebox which would stand up to even a pretty slim screwdriver in a couple of seconds once they’re already in the car.

I guess having some sort of look would be handy in a convertible to stop an opportunistic grab if parked roof down.

Could just use a very simple and basic central locking actuator like cars have had on fuel flaps for decades.

I remember my Dad's Vauxhall Cavalier in 1990 had a key lock on the glovebox handle for if you wanted to lock it. Aren't those a thing anymore?

I'm pretty sure that my 2004 Z4 and 2006 Z4M had a cubby between the seat backs that locked on the central locking. It was pretty pointless given that the roof went up or down in very little time so I would always close the roof anyway.

The only thing I keep in the glovebox is the manual and my car ibuprofen.

I always struggle with the foot wavey thing. Can never seem to get it right consistently. But the Merc’s cool in that you don’t have to unlock it with the key. Just touch the door handle or boot release with the key on your person and it opens

Isn't that part of the keyless entry which makes cars very easy to steal? I turned it straight off on my Audi but I haven't done so with the MX5 and maybe I need to.

Mines the same, but I disable it every lock at home by double pressing the lock button - this disable keyless entry for that time only. I don't do it at the supermarket for when I return with a bag of shopping and a child under each arm means I can press the virtual pedal to open the boot.

I've just checked mine and I don't appear to be able to disable this with the old double key click thing - 2024 GLB.

Bit as stated previously, I'm not concerned about Key cloning etc. I take the necessary precautions with the car - i.e. ensuring its locked. The Keys are stored on a hook, out of sight of the front door but near enough it it so if someone really wants to steal a GLB 220 then God love them. I'n not going to stop them - I won't make it easy but I'm not concerned about making it particularly hard.

In my experience foot wavey isn't the way to go. A reasonably fast in & out without any dawdling usually provides the most satisfying result. Finbar Saunders would have a field day with this post.

It isn’t as EV as all that either. Yes, the wheels are driven by electric motors but it has a petrol engine to generate electricity which seems to run a lot of the time in practice.

Out of all the cars that do the school drop off, a Focus ST with exhaust system of some sort, a lovely classic Range Rover, various diesel vans and regular cars, the loudest is a VW ID4, it’s beaten the Kia E Nero as the most annoying noise.

I wonder if this is a bit of a “spacey noise race” to make people want one. If so, I don’t like it.

The chinese still using fossil fuels to bolster their electricity production. Seems unlikely.

I've noticed this, to the extent that someone's EV making BONG BONG BONG noises made me think something in my car was faulting, in the shop car park the other day.

I mean sure, make it obvious but christ alive that was loud.

Sat in car waiting for gates to open on to a driveway. Suddenly (and quite violently) the seat belt pulled me back and a lot tighter than normal! A car was driving behind me so I guess that had triggered so safety assist but f* me it was startling!

These things aren't solely EV characteristics though all new cars are doing it.

I think the bongs and haptic feedback stuff is a distraction which makes cars less safe?

I have a peeve. Drove the Model 3 for the first time in a month today. I pull out onto the main road and another car is pulling out of its drive. Nothing untoward or odd. Except the Model 3 shits itself and automatically brakes and jerks the wheel into the other side of the road. And it’s not like a gentle jerk like other cars do but a proper wrist hurter.

Anyway, I’m certain I have automatic emergency braking turned off, but go to the settings and it’s on. Check the updates and it says it’s been updated to always turn on for each drive

That sounds like a shitty implementation of what, on other cars at least, is normally a very good safety feature. The only 2 times mines kicked in, both around 40-50mph or so, I was convinced it was too late to avoid an accident, but both times it was enough to not plough into the car in frnot.
